Songkran: Probation department handles 8,000+ DUI cases in 5 days - 389 tagged - Isaan worst

The chief of the Probation Department told Daily News that his department processed more than 8,000 cases of drunk and drug driving in the Songkran period of 11th to 15th April.

 

Nearly 400 people have been ordered to wear electronic monitoring bracelets.

 

The worst province was Maha Sarakham and the north east region in general. 

 

Prasarn Mahaleetrakun said his department handled 4,262 cases of DUI on Monday alone. 

 

Some 203 EM bracelets were issued by the courts. 

 

Those tagged will have to be confined to home during the hours of 10pm to 4am for periods up to two weeks. 

 

They will be required to attend probation meetings four times over a year and complete 24 hours of community service.

 

From 11 to 15th April 389 EM bracelets were ordered to be worn with 387 of those alcohol related and two for driving under the influence of drugs. 

 

In the same period the Probation Department processed 8,383 cases of DUI comprising 8,222 related to alcohol, 150 drugs and 11 cases of negligent driving. 

 

Worst areas were Maha Sarakham with 596 cases, Bangkok 480 and Nakorn Panom 440. 

 

Overall Isaan or the north-east of Thailand had the most drink driving cases.

And that's only the ones that got caught; imagine what the total of Drunk and Drugged up drivers would be if they had all been caught !

and that figure would not change if the police actually made the same effort 365 days a year, is it not time the police did their proper job which currently amounts to putting bodies in bags

If they made them into amulet's everyone would want one ..

Things will never change until the police actually begin enforcing the traffic laws 365 days a year and stffer fines are imposed to violators.

Expect the same next year.. nothing changes Thai drinking habits.

And how will that prevent them doing the same? Needs to be from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., and for months - at a minimum.

 

Our local alcoholics are often unable to stay upright at even 6 p.m., fortunately none of them drive cars, only bikes. Had one chap fall off his bike twice in 20 yards .....

Considering most cases of DUI are committed between the hours of 16.00 and 20.00 ( Govt statement ), what is the point of giving these Morons a bangle that they can wear wiih pride and scoff at the law ?

Now, if the device emitted an Electric shock every time the person tried to leave their house that would be a real deterrent.

...duhh...where and when does any form of punishment come into play....???

I ha no idea you could not drink and drive, I thought it was a thai custom! 

Is that INCLUDING the SOB in a Mercedes who murdered a policeman and his wife while being drunk as a skunk?

Oh, wait ........ he was set free by the court ......

with no police out on the roads in cars pulling over these drunk drivers what can you expect, they know the chances of being caught are negligible so just do it, no regard for their families or anyone else on the roads. Thailand needs to get police cars patrolling the roads so that a lot more people are caught breaking the law, maybe if a lot are pulled over and fined/have their cars/bikes seized they will start to stop doing it. Too many drivers simply dont care about other people, its all about what they want to do and screw the law, this is Thailand and everyone knows the police refuse to work unless it to get tea money and they dont go on the roads to pull them over

Drinking and driving is not the problem. Drinking and driving like an idiot is. I feel safer with a slightly buzzed falang on the road than I do with stone cold sober Thais. At least we tend not to have the ignominious reality that 30+ percent of us feel nothing we do will change preordained fate.
