Police and Excise Department officials have arrested a man in Pattani’s Mayo district and seized 10,802 packets of foreign cigarettes.

Itthipol Liabyainak, who headed the team from Pattani’s Excise Office and Excise Office Region 9, held a press conference to announce the arrest of Yaman Pohleng, the owner of a grocery store in Tambon Sakhor Bon.

Itthipol said the joint operation by Excise officials and border patrol police was carried out following tips-off that Yaman had allegedly opened the grocery store as a front for selling smuggled cigarettes.

He said the seized cigarettes were worth about Bt10 million.

Itthipol alleged that Yaman also used his grocery store as a hub for distributing the smuggled cigarettes to other shops in the area.

He added that large quantities of foreign cigarettes were being smuggled through the three southern border provinces and that Excise officials would crack down on all the shops selling these illegal cigarettes.

They're only worth 10m if you include the stupid duty, which Yaman didn't pay.

The shops would sell them for same price they normally sell them for. That's the idea of smuggled goods.

10,000,000 divided by 10,802 packets equals B924 per packet!

You can expect to see a lot more of this when a packet of taxed cigarettes costs more than a quarter of a days average pay later in the year.

Thai gov  is creating a new crime industry.

The average wage is about 450 a day, but it’s not easy to know the real wage, simply because there are some many vendors around the country that doesn’t pay any taxes or anything, I had a friend who had a coffee shop near the mall tha prae Bangkok, she made around 1200 baht a day after paying for all the expenses like coffee, straws, napkins, etc, owns a house, a car and also have a apartment, works from 05:00 but open shop 06:00 to 11:00 that’s no time many hours of working. Vendors always dress like they’re poor but that doesn’t mean they are...

the cigarette prices are ridiculous compared to Philippines,Vietnam and Indonesia, like 4-5 times higher.
