Drivers were caught in a huge traffic jam on Rama II highway on Thursday morning after about 22 tonnes of steel bars fell from a trailer truck in Samut Sakhon’s Muang district.

Police said the accident happened at 8am on the outbound Rama II highway at the kilometre marker No 18+551 near the bridge over the railway in Tambon Bang Nam Chued. The steel bars blocked two lanes of the road.

Officials used a crane to remove the steel bars from the road and it took about an hour for traffic congestion to ease.

The truck driver, Boonlert Wannakit, 42, told police that he was delivering 32 tonnes of steel bars from Rayong to a buyer in Samut Sakhon. He said he noticed that the part of the road was tilting so he tried to change lanes to the right but a vehicle would not give way.

He said when the truck reached the uneven part of the road, it tilted and some 22 tonne of steel bars rolled off the truck.

No one was injured in the accident.

So the road and a car caused the load to fall off the truck.

Not the fact the only restraints holding it on was gravity and a dust cover :whistling:

Bars , rolls ,spools ,close enough for Thailand

Passed a pick up yesterday where a full three piece suite was lying in the road, across two lanes of a three lane road,  with the Farang driver trying to move it. I didn't stop to help. I love my life too much. 'Tie down' is a black art  here, even among those who should know better.

If such a minor incident is deemed worthy of reporting I am sure Buddha would prefer a little more accuracy with the description of the steel, just saying

32 tonnes .! If its a tri' axle trailer its close to the weight limit anyway .. if its a double axle its over weight .. And the steel coils that fell off are harder to secure than bars as they are described but  ratchet straps would have done the job .. roping is old hat now ..

Or maybe it was another case of the "knot slipping" on a very inadequate piece of string?

What knot would that be, a will not ?  :omfg:

The road was tilted and he couldn't change lanes to the right because of other traffic. I suppose stopping for a few seconds until it was clear was out of the question? 'Nah, I know it's dangerous, but let's just keep going'.
