Hello. This is my first and probably not

my last on the forums.

I recently came to Thailand with the hopes of doing some volunteering as an English teacher.

I have been offered a volunteer teaching position but I only have a tourist visa on arrival.

Can I apply for a non immigrant o visa in Bangkok at the immigration bureau? Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you!

It is possible to apply for a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) entry if you and the organization you will be working with can qualify for it. Info here: https://www.immigration.go.th/content/service_81

Otherwise you will have to apply for a single entry non-o visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

Yes my organisation and school will vouch for me. The first person to reply says I can’t and have to do it outside of Thailand. Surely I can do it here!

It is possible but it may not be easy to get done.

This line in the requirements might be the hardest to get.

"5. A letter from the relevant department requesting for Visa or Visa Status Alteration (Attention: Immigration Commissioner)"

That means a letter from a government department which might not be easy to get.

It is a shortened version of the clause for getting a extension of stay for volunteer work.

"(3) Must have been confirmed and requested by the head of a government agency equivalent to or higher than the departmental level or by the head of a state enterprise or by the head of another government agency relating to the organization."

You have to appreciate that all you can do in Thailand is to apply to convert your entry into that of a Non-Imm-O. This facility is usually a precursor for someone aiming to obtain a one years Extension based on retirement or marriage.

Take Ubonjoe's input as accurate.

Also you say you obtained a Tourist Visa on arrival, in reality I expect you have a 30 day Visa Waiver.
