Nong Khai customs officers have charged a Lao with smuggling medical cannabis oil into Thailand via the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.

Pornpirom Wichit, 45, was arrested in Mueang Nong Khai district after 65 bottles of cannabis oil, estimated to be worth around Bt195,000, were found in his luggage.

Nimit Saeng-ampai, head of the Nong Khai Customs Office, said the oil was medical grade and the bottles carried labels in Thai describing the medicinal properties and directions for use.

He said this was the first time that customs officers had encountered any variant of medical marijuana being smuggled.

Nimit claimed that Pornpirom confessed to being paid Bt5,000 by another Lao to deliver the oil to a Thai client in Udon Thani.

He allegedly said the oil was made in Laos and intended for sale in Thailand priced at Bt2,000 for each 30-millilitre bottle.

Pornpirom was charged with smuggling a Category 5 narcotic into the Kingdom and turned over to police.

If it is CBD oil, it should have no more than an infinitesmal trace of the stuff that actually makes you high. Therefore it is not a narcotic. Therefore no crime has been committed. If this Lao guy actually challenged the charge, he might get off on the basis that whatever he was carrying, it was not by anyone's definition a narcotic.

Just because it was made from the same plant means nothing. That would mean that the piece of string you are carrying would get you into trouble as it too was also made from hemp.

Can you please provide a source for where you got this information? I didn't think that cannabis-derived oils for medicinal purposes (regardless of THC content) were legal yet – as the regulations governing the recent legislation haven't yet been drawn up.

This will play out over and over and over again in the future imho.  Especially when the anointed Thai cannabis oil manufacturers come online.

"You steal food from mouth of children of cannabis oil monopoly owners!!!"
