Luckydog
There is a lovely walk along the side of the Hill just opposite the main Tourist Police Station on the way from Pattaya to Jomtien. The Council must have spent millions providing landscaping and lighting, so that tourists, and keep fitters could enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and the lovely view of Pattaya Bay. But now, the lamp standards are all ascew.....pulled down for the shades, and the copper cables that must fetch a few Baht for scrap! About forty Lamp Standards have been destroyed, and what has City Hall done about it? Have they sent the Cops there at night to catch the thieves? Not on your nelly. It's sickening. The Cops don't have time to prosecute these thieves. As I've said in other posts, lately there's been more important things to do like shake down Bars for playing copy CDs and arrest tourists for not carrying their passports. They get 40,000 baht off the owner of a Bar if he is caught with one copy CD on his premises (you know, the ones they sell on Beach Road and Walking St). If they catch the young Thai guys who are stealing cable and light fittings, how much will they make? Not as much I'd think.

Actually I was quite surprised the the amount of money and effort that was obviously invested into erecting the PATTAYA sign on the hill. The electricity cost for lighting it up must be pretty significant. Pity some of the money couldn't be diverted to repair the already damaged slate steps, or the damaged light standards. naka
Yes, and the walk from Bali Hai to the lighthouse has also been vandalized. The place is also a stinking pig pen of food/containers and broken bottles. When will the locals stop being so irresponsible ? Naka.

Yea, I remember him. He was a Phuket native, stealing the lovely Patters manhole covers to sell to the Phuket authorities to replace the grotty/dangerous welded flatbar monstrosities they fit down there. Phuket ... Upmarket holiday location ... My Bottom Oh, and have you heard of their "right hand rule" TIT ! Naka. Edited March 13, 2007 by naka

A team of workers from the Council are now busy removing what's left of the Lighting System, and a couple of Security men are in place. Thanks to a piece I did for TV the other day..... Luckydog
I wonder if these are the culprits? Cable Thieves Caught by Quick Police Response. At 5.30 on Friday morning a police patrol from the Dong-tan sub-station were called to Soi Chaiyapreuk 2 in Jomtien after receiving a report claiming two men were seen walking down the street carrying electrical cable and a circuit breaker. Police easily spotted the two men, one aged 32, the other 25, as they were the only ones wandering down this particular stretch of tarmac carrying a lot of electrical wiring. When they saw the police they decided they might have a difficult time answering questions and attempted to run away. The men in brown were too fleet-footed for the pair and they were quickly taken into custody. Back at the station they were urine tested and came up positive for ya bah, at which point they confessed they wanted to steal the cable to sell for money to buy drugs. If they were, being arrested didn't put a stop to their thieving ways.....

Now that almost all the Lamp Posts and remaining Copper Cables have been taken back by City Halls workers, the Security men have left. But I see that the thieves have turned their attention to the other side of the Hill! It would be funny if it was not so sad.......
Luckydog
Update. Last night the one security Guard left on the Hill, caught a guy pinching Copper cable, on the other, as yet undecimated side of the Hill. After a struggle he got him to the Cop Shop. But, as the miscreant didn't actually have a reel of Copper Cable round his neck, they were going to let him go. Fortunately however, they found some drugs in his pocket so they charged him with that!

Now they are smashing the Concrete Bases of the Lamp Posts that have been removed, to get at the Steel rods that reinforce them! Must be a noisy business. But luckily the Security Guard appears to be a heavy sleeper!
