Cable route

Featured Replies

I need to put power to a small building which is 40M from my main Consumer Unit but only 12M from the Supply Point (where the meter is). I was going to run 4mm cable off an MCB in my CU to the new building (main benefit being I can isolate the power from within the house). But I’m wondering if it might be better (if allowed) to take supply direct from the incoming Supply point. There are currently 2 CUs with the second getting supply from the first CU (off the MCB). Both share the same earth.

Would appreciate thoughts on best way of getting supply to this new outbuilding. Thanks

Maybe go from meter to new building with isolator then to your current isolator?

Good idea but I’d have to introduce a connection point/extend existing cable since the current cable from meter to isolator switch isn’t long enough to reuse to reach the new building. I could go from meter to new isolator switch, then split off from there to new building and to existing isolator switch.

Splice?  I'm pretty sure that needs to be done a certain way or not at all and it's not in my repertoire.

I would be concerned that PEA won't let you add a second connection at the meter, if you do you'll need to stick to the cable sizes specified by PEA for your meter size (so 4mm2 isn't going to cut it).

Your best bet would be to talk to PEA in the first instance.
