BANGKOK, 7 June 2019 (NNT) - The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) expects that the amount of rainfall this year will be less than that of last year by some three percent. It has now prepared a storage plan to supply water in the next dry season.

RID Director General Thongplaew Kongchan disclosed the water management plan today following an announcement by the Meteorological Department that Thailand will experience widespread rain until June 9, 2019. The amount of water in reservoirs now totals 39,252 million cubic meters, accounting for 52 percent of their capacity; 15.32 billion cubic meters or 29 percent of the stored water is suitable for general use. The four major dams in the Chao Phraya river basin: Bhumibol Dam, Sirikit Dam, Kwai Noi Bamrungdaen Dam and Pa Sak Jolasid Dam, contain a combined amount of water of 10.14 billion cubic meters or 41 percent of their capacity. At this time, 3.4 billion cubic meters of water can be used and will suffice until the next rainy season.

The RID Director General has also advised farmers living in lowland areas to start farming earlier than usual, in order to harvest their produce before the flood season. Farmers in the twelve fields of the lower Chao Phraya river basin have therefore been farming since May, so as to harvest their produce by September, before the fields are used as catchment areas from the end of September onwards.

Meanwhile, the RID is to organize an event to mark its 117th anniversary on the theme "RID CREATIVITY & INNOVATION 2019" to present innovations in response to the RID’s strategy and continue the royal initiatives. It is expected to be attended by at least 10,000 people.

I see that the Water Department are toeing the Government line for the future with their "RID CREATIVITY & INNOVATION 2019" theme! That is exactly what a repressive government does. What is so special about 117th anniversary anyway?

I would guess they are amazed they lasted more than a year, never mind 117, due to the amount of incompetence they employ?
