WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday asked an appeals court to overturn a ruling that his accounting firm must turn over his financial records from before he was president to the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives Oversight Committee.

 

Lawyers for Trump said in a court filing that a May 20 decision by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ordering Mazars LLP to comply with the subpoena was flawed and should be reversed.

 

Mehta's ruling was the first time a federal court waded into the tussle about how far Congress can go in probing Trump and his business affairs, and marked an important victory for House Democrats.

 

Trump is refusing to cooperate with a series of investigations on issues ranging from his tax returns to his Washington hotel and his children’s security clearances.

 

Trump’s lawsuit, filed on April 22, argued that the committee's subpoena exceeded constitutional limits on the power of Congress to investigate.

He wants this stopped at all costs. Why? This is a president who insists his administration is transparent. That would be amusing, if it were not so tragic. The revelation of his financial records may be damaging for many reasons.

 

1. The may reveal the nature and extent of the bank fraud he likely committed with Deutsche Bank, when he grossly over inflated the value of his properties, to get the loans. That is a felony that could land him in a federal prison for the rest of his life. Exactly where he belongs.

2. They may reveal that his net worth is huuuugely less than he claims. My guess is that he is worth about $1.5 billion. We know about the 680 million in debt he is currently carrying. So, that puts his net worth at considerably under a billion dollars. Donald may only be a centimillionaire, after all. 

3. This would reveal that he is among the least charitable. and stingiest of the wealthy Americans in the history of the nation. That is just who the man is.

4. This would possibly reveal that he has not paid income taxes in a generation. For a man who labels himself a patriot, that one might be hard to swallow, for some of his most ardent devotees.

 

There is nothing good that can come out of the release of either his financial statements or his tax returns. Both would show him as the phony he truly is, and would reveal ugly behavior.

Interesting the precedent being set for congressional behavior. Expect any democrat POTUS to get the same treatment going forward if Republicans control congress.

The Mueller report did not find there was no collusion. In fact the opposite is true, he did find many instances of collusion. He also found many instances of obstruction of justice.
