BANGKOK, 21 June 2019 (NNT) - Silver garlands signify unified ASEAN community cooperation in mutual assistance and support. Amphawan Phichalai, director of the SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand, said silver garlands, created by a teacher named Naruemol Thonjai, are provided as souvenirs for ASEAN leaders attending the ASEAN Summit.

The teacher was inspired by garlands for monks, which signify the respectful spirits and are used on auspicious occasions or provided for guests.

Silver garlands were delicately created with wisdom and technique and are compatible with the Summit symbol.

They are made of pure silver in a complex process and manufactured by hand by artists of That Phanom district of Nakhon Phanom province. The silver garlands are fashioned as a bunch of roses, jasmine and crown flowers which look almost real.

Just do one with ASEAN.. I've yet to meet anyone who's benefited from Thailand being a part of ASEAN. If there was free movement of people, that allowed ASEAN people to work in any ASEAN countries, then Singapore's population would swell by the millions. All Thais I've met that have spent time abroad as slave immigrants have all gone to Europe or Australia to work in the fields.

Next time better give away 24K gold garlands to gain even more unneeded face. No worries, the sheep that you call taxpayers will gladly foot the bill (mostly because it is exclusively you, the glorious and oh so image-conscious Thai government, that is making decisions such as this one on their behalf).

Now honestly, wouldn't have regular flower garlands - crafted with "wisdom and technique", whatever that's supposed to mean - just about have accomplished the trick? If they're good enough for the monks cited in this article, then they certainly are good enough for ASEAN delegates, too.

Sorry, but waste always makes me angry; and this is sheer waste.

There may be some significance in  the "gifts"  which  although  only representative  and fashioned  as floral  will last a longer than  real ones which are dead at  moment of plucking!

Which Government does  not make decisions on behalf of the taxpayers? What International event  does  not involve the host in offering a mark of  recognition?

As  a commissioned  artifact these items have spread some  expenditure into the  community at least.

Perhaps a  focus on the diplomatic representatives in receipt of these tokens as to whether they  pocket them  or  surrender them to their  national archives in  note of the  occasion would be  a better  scrutiny on behalf of taxpayers?

Or better yet to analyse the  verbose declarations at end of the  occasion to  evaluate  the benefit to those which they represent rather than vent  about items which in the overall  expenditure  involved  for  all attending probably  adds up  to a sum  which  puts  gifts for attendance in insignificance.
