Myanmar is considering issuing National Verification Cards (NVC) to Rohingya refugees who want to voluntarily return from Bangladesh to the strife-torn Rakhine state, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said on Saturday.

Asean foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the Asean Summit and discussed repatriation of the refugees following the long stalemate since November last year when the refugee group resisted the plan due to fears about their safety.

“We discussed safe repatriation and recognition of their status in Myanmar society upon their return,” Don told reporters after the meeting.

Myanmar authorities would issue them an NVC, a step towards recognition of their identity, he said.

More than 740,000 Rohingya refugees fled from violence in Rakhine state since August 2017 after a heavy-handed “clearance operation” by the Myanmar military in responding to attacks on security outposts.

Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed on a repatriation deal in late 2017 but it is yet to be implemented. Don said both countries needed to set the terms, conditions and timeline and the screening procedure.

Asean has agreed to enhance its role and visibility in humanitarian assistance, repatriation and sustainable development in Rakhine state.

Asean Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi and an assessment team from the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management visited Rakhine several times between December and May. Their report on the matter was circulated among ministers for further discussion and instruction.

They can only get status if they pledge an oath of allegiance to Myanmar, by speaking their language and fully integrating into society. Most Muslims do not assimilate well, or refuse to integrate in favor of their cultish ideology which (in many cases) is not compatible with a hosting country. If you look at Europe as an example; this has become a shining example of what happens when you bring in immigrants who then fail to integrate. The result is partition of ghettos, and segregation. I believe anyone (not just Muslims) must be forced to integrate above all else, and accept the rights and values of that country. If not, then perhaps it's better to live in a Muslim country.

China as we have seen over the last few years actively enforces this policy. Muslims have a choice, either conform or be detained until you submit. I'm sure they look west and see the mess in Europe, as a constant reminder that their policy is best in order to protect their own culture and ideology, after all China is after all an atheist country.

I wonder how many farangs here speak the language and fully integrate with Thai society? Most "has become a shining example of what happens when you bring in immigrants who then fail to integrate." Christianity is as "cultish" as Islam (jeez... does this really need to be said?).

Citing China as a good example of how to deal with people not like you... really? "Detain until you submit"... eh? Islam has been in China for 1400 years! I reckon you may be a big fan of El Cid, kicking the Muslims and Jews out of Spain in 1492. Part of the reason the West came out of the dark ages was contact during Christian jihad (crusades) with Muslim culture and learning. Ban algebra! Ban Astronomy! Ban Arabic numerals, use Roman! Forget about Greek philosophy etc (which was preserved in Muslim countries while Europe went stupid and insular.)
