"Behavior" app not a way for the government to snoop on the people, says NBTC

A senior official has denied that a new application set up by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission is a way for the state to snoop on people.

Many in Thailand were suspicious when the "Phreutimat" app was introduced. The app's name has connotations to the Thai word for "behavior" (preut-ti-gam).

Korkit Danchaiwijit, a deputy at the NBTC with responsibility for mobile phone usage, said that the app would enable consumers to gauge their mobile phone usage in real time.

It will help them to ascertain the best package for them to use in the future.

He said "Phreutimat" was easy, problem free and not complicated and was a useful tool for finding out one's own mobile behavior.

It was not there so that the NBTC or the wider government could snoop on people or invade their privacy or data.

Manager said that the app would also help the NBTC to gauge and track consumer behavior "in the interests of fairness".

Thai online forums discussing the app are full of people suspicious of the motives of the NBTC and the government.

Wish immigration would come up with an app like this so they know where I am at all times.

Would save having to go see your parole officer every 90 days.

wonder what permissions it asks for? like everything?

Unless of course you had family who found your relatives with concrete stomachs, then I guess not too much happiness was brought.

...years ago during the Bird Flu epidemic, the brain trust, also decided they wanted to use micro chip markers for fighting cocks...555.... maybe those official, passed on their marketing technique to this company.

What a dumb idea.  I barely use the Thai networks at all anyway when there.  WiFi is enough.  The silliness will never end.

Does one need to know one's mobile beahviour?

Amazing Thailand

It would be OK if there was a tradeoff. No TM 30 or 90 day report if you install the app on your phone comes to mind.

These comments are more appropriate to the US and other western governments that snoop on everybody's calls and electronic communication without even admitting of doing so.
