Intrepid reporter praised for highlighting pothole problems with viral picture

A Workpoint News reporter has been praised for helping to highlight the problems of residents in the Thai province of Samut Sakhon.

Locals fed up with potholes in the road contacted the media and Kanwaela Soa-ruen or Popia went to investigate.

She wanted a good picture to go with her story and after an interviewee said they didn't want to go down the hole she took the plunge!

She said the hole was 1.5 meters deep and presented a great danger to road users who had been complaining for the last two months and got no action.

The picture was widely shared and commented upon across social media.

Popia told Daily News Online she wanted to be a "mouthpiece for the people".

Looks more like a sink hole than a pot hole .

F^&k the roads,we want Submarines,Helicopters,Tanks and

other weapons of war,if only Thailand had some real investigative

journalists to uncover all that is going on here, problem is ,i can

see them  having a very short shelf life !.

She will be arressted for tarnishing the good name of Thailand !

Errmh... if I was a Thai woman I'd probably not want to declare myself "a mouthpiece for the people".

Yes. If I remember correctly a young lady was pictured taking a bath in a pothole to bring the villager's plight to the attention of those responsible for maintaining the roads. I think she was made to apologise.

That could be dangerous if she forgets to replace the tree branch after exiting the hole.

About 26 feet wide and 40 feet deep!  But the one in Guatemala City in 2010 was approximately 65 ft (20 m) across and 300 ft (90 m) deep!  They had another good one in 2007.

She looks like a Meercat lookout ..

I'd share a burrow with her.

I saw a small "sinkhole" in a back street in lower Manhattan (New York City) near Chinatown that was almost as big as the one she's in.  Someone had stuffed a big wire basket type trash container in it to mark the spot.  It was there for years.  Of course, NYC has an incredible labyrinth of stuff underground, going down many stories or layers underground.  Electric, water, steam, subways, sewer, storm sewer, telecommunication cables, etc.  Very complex. (Though maybe not as bad as the overhead wires on poles in Thai cities, 555.)

Can you imagine if that was full of rain water & you thought it was just a puddle...

Back during the days, when construction for the track for Skytrain, especially by Central World Plaza, walking during rainy season was an adventure.
