TAT reach out to the NY Pride March to attract more LGBT tourists to Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is reaching out to the US LGBT community to help broaden Thailand’s tourism base and attract more travellers. The TAT sent a contingent to New York’s annual pride parade, held on World Pride Day, to lure more tourists to the Kingdom. The parade was held last Sunday.

TAT are using the branding “Go Thai Be Free” in their ‘come to Thailand’ marketing campaign aimed at the large US LGBT base.

(LGBT, LGBTQ, GLBT – all acronyms listing people identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer)

The director of the TAT office in New York, Charinya Kiatlapnachai, says they were marketing at the event to encourage LGBT tourists to visit Thailand. The TAT say statistics show that 5 million US citizens identify under the LGBT banner. The TAT has also been promoting the message of Thailand being a safe and fun travel destination for LGBT travellers in the Latin American market where the target audience reaches more than 20 million potential travellers.

NY Pride Event organisers say there were about  150,000 marchers in the actual parade and more than 4 million visitors to the city to watch the event. The annual pride march, held in many cities around the world, commemorates the ‘Stonewall Uprising’, an event seen as triggering the modern LGBT movement. This year was the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.

Why do they keep using the word "lure" ?

I guess this definition from vocabulary.com has it about right:

"to provoke someone to do something through (often false or exaggerated) promises or persuasion"

Yes: 'lure' always suggests 'luring people to their doom' - enticing the unaware and guileless to step into undreamed-of territories of danger!

I’m sure they will love all the Chinese tourists, scams, and double pricing.

Let’s hope the TAT lets them know to bring 20k baht cash.

Hard to believe that any gay person is unaware of Thailand.   Perhaps they should allow for longer stays with less hassles, open up the business sector.  Business people stay longer and nicer hotels than tourists.   The spend your model and go home as soon as possible is just plane boring.  During the hight of junta mania, talked to foreign restaurant owners.   They said their regular customers disappeared, leaving them to survive on tourists.  Many were unable to do that.    TAT has the key to an empty room in Thailand.

This makes business sense for sure.

No need to build infrastructure and gay bars, they already exist.

Thais are, and have traditionally been, tolerant of homosexuality.

The local entertainment industry exploits gay men as comic actors. If LGBTIQ people start coming to Thailand as tourists in large numbers, those stereotypes may have to change.

I think a little too late to 'corner' the market, improving world wide acceptance has probably the opposite effect in that the LGBT community are welcomed at all class of resorts - not reduced to trawling the streets in well known 'entertainment' areas

Harking back to the article concerning the soon to be held Scrabble Tournament, another anagram is found.  The word "lure" is can become RULE, a word this government loves because it exactly fits into the vocabulary of their agenda.

'nuf sed.

Ahh TAT and Thailand is jumping on the bandwagon realizing that events like this generate hundreds of millions of dollars very often over only one weekend!

Sad thing is Thailand has done nothing for the LGBT community.

They only want the money!

While many even more conservative countries then Thailand have made lots of progress over the last 30 years nothing has changed in Thailand.

There are no rights at all for gay people in this country, no legal partnership or marriage.

So Thailand wants the money from the LGBT community but does not want to do anything to legally recognize them?
