Prawit says he's had enough as defence minister

General Prawit Wongsuwan has indicated he might give up his post as defence minister despite being named to retain the role in a Cabinet list obtained from Government House sources.

 

The list indicates that Prawit, who is also the deputy prime minister, would hold the defence portfolio in tandem with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha in the new government. 

 

Commenting on media rumours that he would not be handed the defence portfolio in the Prayut II government, Prawit denied any knowledge of the list but said his eight years in the post were long enough. 

 

Prawit has had two spells as Defence Minister, for two years and 232 days during the Abhisit Vejjajiva government and for more than five years under the current administration.

 

“I don’t know either whether I will continue to hold the post of deputy prime minister since my health is now poor,” he said.

 

Prawit is seen as the “elder brother” among the three junta leaders of the junta National Council for Peace and Order, commanding the respect of Prayut and Interior Minister Gen Anupong Pao-chinda.

 

Prawit also said he shared the view of Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam that the Prayut II government would be an “iron ship”.

He's been flying to Switzerland for his health, as all Thais do of course, so he's probably been told to give it up or suffer. Personally I'd like him to have both.

Unfortunately Prawit will be one of five Deputy Prime Ministers, he is only forgoing the defence ministry. He has claimed to be too ill to continue in the role.

The time in life has come for Prawit to play with watches, not guns and tanks. Either way, he has plenty to play with.

 

Matter of time before all the 3 Ps from the Eastern Tiger faction will be dispatched. Prawit will be the first then Paochinda (Anupong). New boys in town.

Well, he's currently the deputy prime minister, but what happens when the new government is formed? Has anyone clarified how the deputy prime minister is chosen?

There's nothing "normal" about the current situation.

The PM has never put himself up for election by the people and now it looks like he will be appointing his other non-elected buddies into his cabinet (breaking all the promises of plum jobs for the toadies who selected him).

He's not done even if he doesn't head the Defense Ministry on paper as the one. And I say on paper only.

Funny how Thai nationalists claim to live in the best country on earth and see all foreigners as evil.

But then they go overseas for health treatment and send their kids abroad to study.
