Apart from the glamorous clothes and hairstyles, one of the popular things about the Netflix original series “Stranger Things” is the 1980s music. When the third season premiered on Thursday, Spotify took a look at how the series soundtrack resonated with the app’s listeners. After all, since “Stranger Things” launched on July 15, 2016, listeners have spent more than 17 million hours listening to its music via the music-streaming app.

Perhaps it’s no surprise to fans of the spooky series that The Clash’s 1981 hit “Should I Stay or I Should I Go” ranks as the most-streamed song on Spotify, either through the original soundtrack or on playlists listeners have created themselves.

It turns out listeners have been creating playlists based on the show’s characters: the girl with superpower, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), has had the most playlists created because of her, followed by Steve Harrington (Joe Keery)and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp).

Spotify listeners have created more than 3,500 playlists titled “The Upside Down”, the name of the theme that runs over the title sequences and most of the end credits. The top tracks in these playlists are the eerie track “The Upside Down” from composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, as well as the instantly-recognisable “Stranger Things” main theme.

Spotify lists 15 “Stranger Things” podcasts and listeners have spent more than 4.6 thousand hours listening to them. The most-streamed podcast related to the show is “The Stranger Things” podcast by Addi and Darrell Darnell.

The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” played a central role in Season 1 (Will would sing it to calm himself in the final episode of season one, “Upside Down”), and global streams of the song rose 30 per cent in the two weeks after “Stranger Things” premiered on July 15, 2016.

Top tracks on “Stranger Things” soundtracks and playlists on Spotify are the remastered version of The Clash singing “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, followed by “Stranger Things” by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein and “Every Breath You Take” by The Police.

The rest are “Africa” by Toto, “Kids” by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, “Elegia” by New Order, “Atmosphere” by Joy Division, “Hazy Shade of Winter” by The Bangles and “Whip It” by DEVO.

For die-hard fans of the series, Spotify’s blog For the Record interviewed actor Finn Wolfhard (who played Mike) and questioned him about his favourite songs from the series. He also revealed the type of music he’s into at the moment … and which decade he’d most like to travel back in time to.
