Deputy Defence Minister Chaicharn Changmongkol has dismissed as misleading media reports that police had set the condition, that political activist Sirawith Seritiwat, alias Ja New, must stop his political activities, if he is to be accorded police protection.

General Chaicharn made the statement in response to an impromptu interpellation, by Future Forward MP Rangsiman Rome, during the lower House meeting today about the protection arrangements for Ja New.

Speaking on behalf of Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who was absent, General Chaicharn said that free expression is a basic right of individuals and is guaranteed by the Constitution. He then denied that the protection offered to Ja New was conditional on his withdrawal from political activity.

"So far, police have been unable to apprehend anyone in connection with the assault."

Meanwhile, eight people, who shared accusations online alleging that Pol Gen Chaiwat Kateworachai, the deputy national police chief, is the mastermind behind the attack on Ja New, reported to the Technology Crime Suppression Police Division to acknowledge charges of violations of the Computer Crime Act.

Five others are yet to report to acknowledge the same charges.

Police said that the 13 suspects face a maximum jail term of five years and/or a maximum fine of 100,000 baht for spreading false information online.

Absolutely un <deleted> believable !

Put all your effort into charging the people posting online, because, everyone knows, the attackers will never be brought to justice under this (still). military JUNTA.

The BIG question is who reports the misleading information?

foolishness and denials; an endless cycle here

Oddly, quite often with 'this lot' things that have been reported by the press then subsequently denied, end up being announced as policy a few days later, although I can't really imagine this one being announced as policy, but you never know.

Thai police have a long established history of integrity and transparency.  No one questions their motives or the necessity of police interventions...such as roadblocks to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the traveler...

If you should per chance act negatively toward the police...it will likely be a one time occurrence...????

General Chaicharn said that free expression is a basic right of individuals and is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Theses guys invoke and then ignore the provisions of the constitution on a whim. What about all the free expression clamp downs over the last 4 years, to the point where on certain occasions you couldn't even eat sandwiches or read certain books in public.

Quite.
That was five years ago, so things have improved vastly since those dark days. Now he thinks George Orwell's a really cool guy.
<end of sarcasm mode>

The PM's hatred of free speech, and his persecution of anyone reading 1984, by charging them with "eating a sandwich with political intent" in June 2014:

How come - when the show gets messy - some senior cop has to come up with a fairy story, call it fake news, blame everybody else, threaten a few FB users and thinks that is the end of that.

ANNND - isn't it always a strange coincidence when these things get messy somebody's name keeps popping up - Not present at this press release! - No short runway nearby!

Why was Chaicharn speaking on behalf of Prawit?

Surely Prawit is man enough to speak for himself.

Problem was Prawit was busy flying around in his new toy.

Probably caught short with a medical emergency He needs to get off the pot(ty).
