BANGKOK, 16 July 2019 (NNT) - The Senate Speaker said today a clear measure has been put in place in the wake of criticism of a photo showing a handful of senators at a meeting.

The issue was raised at Monday’s Senate meeting chaired by Senate Speaker Pornpetch Wichitcholchai after acknowledging the 36 new cabinet members had received royal endorsement.

Senator Wanchai Sornsiri said members of the Upper House had been widely criticized after the photo was circulated on social media. He said it is necessary to explain the facts and procedures of the senators’ work to prevent misunderstandings.

The Senate Speaker explained that the temporary meeting room could accommodate over 600 people but there were only 250 senators. Therefore, the picture of a Senate session could cause an impression of low attendance. Some senators attended their committee meetings on the same day and some others took turns to have their meals to prevent work or the meeting from being interrupted.

He stated that the meeting measure has been clearly put in place. A chat application will be used to alert senators whenever there is low attendance at meetings. He said he had told the press members that the time of parliamentarians is not limited to the main chamber, because they also have to attend committee meetings. He has called on all senators to be aware of the criticisms and strictly comply with the regulations.

If one were to count all the family members that could be employed as Senate staff, a room for 600 might be the right size.

average age of them is 70, they need a lot of rest and sleep. Most of them never worked a day in their life, so a little difficult for them to get motivated, they are reach anyway.

They should rename the upper house to half-way house for retirees.
