Hello!

I am hoping someone here can help..

I was born in the UK - my dad is British and my mum and Thai.

I am looking to see if I can get dual nationality. My problem is, when I was born, my mum was technically a British Citizen as she decided not to keep her Thai passport. Is it still possible for me to apply for a Thai passport despite not my mum not having a Thai passport?

Thanks

You need to find out whether or not your Mum formally gave up her Thai nationality. Just because she didn't renew her passport doesn't mean she has lost her Thai nationality.

Your mother still has Thai nationality. You are also a Thai national from birth.

With proof you mother is is Thai you would need to apply for a Thai birth certificate at the thai embassy in London if you were born in the UK.

Thank you both for your reply!

I do know she has an identity card, but it's now very out of date. It's something I will look into further with the Thai Embassy in London.

Many thanks

Mum & Dad will have to go to London with you to the Embassy with you to do your Thai Birth cert and passport ( if your parents were ever married before they need proof of divorce).

You could perhaps do the ID card later in Thailand.

Copy mums ID card, the personal number on the ID card, may have featured on her Thai passport, they do nowadays anyway.

Similar situation to my Daughter, she has Thai passport, BC, and ID, born in Scotland, with Thai nationality from her mother.

I was in the exact same situation and it worked out fine. My mom never renewed her Thai documents after she moved to Germany with her parents when she was a teenager. It was even more complicated because she didn't have an ID and it was not clear in which house register she was, no passport etc. But once she had her renewed Thai ID + Thai Passport my parents went to the Consulate in Frankfurt to register my birth (I was 32 at that time) and obtained a Thai birth certificate. With this certificate, me and two uncles -who acted as witnesses- went to the Amphue and I was added to a house register and finally my Thai ID was issued.

At the embassy they might ask for a valid ID & Passport, at least that's what they needed from my mom but it could be different. Anyway, good luck and don't worry. It will definitely work!
