penguin
In Contol Panel go to Sounds and Audio. Check speaker volume and in the Audio tab check all the volume settings.
samtam
Actually, all I have now is Realtek, which gives an echo sound. How can I switch it to normal audio??
sabajja
If you previously had another sound driver installed, that worked to your satisfaction, windows probably has a backup copy of it. Enter device manager=>Sound Video & Game controllers Rightclick the sound driver and choose "Properties". Under "Driver tab" choose "Roll back driver". samtam
Thanks for your suggestion Sabajja. I don't see a "sound driver" in the device manager, (although I do have "sound video & game controllers")

sabajja
Thanks for your suggestion Sabajja. I don't see a "sound driver" in the device manager, (although I do have "sound video & game controllers") It wont say "sound driver", it will say Realtek if that's the driver you're using now. Try rolling back that one if you had a previous one. If that doesn't work, find the Install CD to your mainboard, you should find the original sound drivers on there. yeti
Alternatively you could use Xp's system restore, and restore your computer to a date before this problem appeared.

Jockstar
When did it stop? Did you install anything new? Hardware or software? Try reinstalling Realtek. Link can be found here. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downlo...p;GetDown=false
lopburi3
I have Realtek HD but using Vista so not sure everything would be the same. I can open in control panel and adjust settings. Under advanced settings is an option to turn off other output when you plug in headphone (and I use that) but perhaps others would not want that. There is a selection under speakers/sound effects which will probably get rid of the echo effect.
