Depends highly on where you/your wife are from. Would say if you are German and your wife is French, there is no need to tell the British Embassy.

No, You don't need to tell the Embassy unti after. Give your wife 10 grant or something (moeny talks in Thailand) then take your wife to the nearest Amphur and get her to sign on the dotted line. Et voila.... it's that simple.

If she refuses then you'd better hire a good lawyer: 25,000 - 30,000 Baht is what it will probably cost ya.
