North, NE warned of heavy rain as Wipha moves closer

The Meteorological Department Friday warned residents of the North and Northeast to brace themselves for possible heavy rains from tropical storm Wipha, which is expected to make a landfall in Vietnam Friday.

In the warning issued at 5am Friday, the department said the storm was over the Gulf of Tonkin, Guangxi, China at a latitude of 21.2 degree North and longitude of 109.2 degree East at 4am Friday.

With maximum sustained winds of about 70 knots, it was moving west slowly and was expected to make landfall over upper Vietnam later in the day.

Torrential downpours will be likely over the country especially in the Northeast and the North and may cause flash flooding and landslides in certain areas.

The warning added that the strong southwest monsoon, which is now prevailing across the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf, would unleash more rain and isolated heavy downpours over the South and the East until Tuesday.

It's going to miss our area. We could do with a decent downpour. Ponds are only half full. Rice is dead. Water table 2 metres below what it should be. Rationing on village water. Stores out of bottled water.

The Mekong is very low. That needs a big drop further upstream so maybe the storm will do some good.

I've got 19 giant Mekong catfish for sale if the government is interested.

In Pak Thong Chai, Korat: been waiting for the heavy rain for the past couple of days but nothing yet, just a little bit of light rain, hardly anything really. But frequent strong winds over the past couple of days. Like elsewhere in NE we could do with some heavy rainfall here, it's been very dry and dusty.

Yep, looks like the storm took a bit of a turn.   Not raining in Khon Kaen even as per talk someone living there.   No way gonna hit CM area it seems

I live Khonkaen and it's not raining, But it's very windy maybe that's blowing any rain away.
