Thai tax riddle: Elite Visa holders off the hook?
Whispers on Facebook’s Elite/Privilege Group suggest that holders of the controversial five to 20 years visa could dodge the Thai Revenue Department’s (TRD) new tax ruling. Starting January 1 this year, assessable income sent from abroad by Thais or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days will be subject to personal income tax. A group member claimed, after attending a webinar, that Elite members might be exempt from needing a tax number or filing tax forms, potentially aligning them with the tax-friendly Long Term Residence (LTR) visa holders, who enjoy no personal taxation on overseas income sent to Thailand. This revelation quickly spread like wildfire across Thai media outlets. However, the excitement was short-lived. A group moderator stepped in, clarifying that the attachment shared during the webinar was merely a PowerPoint presentation, not an official document from the TRD. “We’re not going to take comments on its accuracy or validity,” they stated, putting an end to the speculation. To date, neither the TRD nor the official Thai Privilege website has commented on the matter. The TRD’s ruling applies to all tax residents, excluding those with the 10-year LTR visa, allowing overseas income to remain untaxed until December 31 last year. Thailand’s unique tax structure raises questions, especially for retirees relying on pensions already taxed in their home countries. Additionally, many countries maintain double taxation agreements with Thailand, aimed at preventing individuals from being taxed twice on specific earnings. As the TRD gears up to release new tax forms before Christmas for the 2024 calendar year, expectations run high. Some tax accountants predict clarifications in accompanying notes, while others remain sceptical. The primary aim of the TRD appears to be increasing revenue from untapped sources like cryptocurrency and offshore earnings, reported Pattaya Mail. has anyone managed to make the secured deposit the 800k required by immigration? for those of us that needs it? the bank book and statement when requested doesn't say anything about it being used as collateral against credit cards, plus as term deposit you can't withdraw before the 'due date' anyway so immigration can't ask for withdrawal/deposits to get fresh statements If it's possible then you can actually 'spend' the 800k using this loophole -

Thailand’s Business Ease Ranking Plummets in Asia-Pacific: Survey
Thailand now ranks among the least business-friendly nations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a recent survey by the Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (ASIFMA). Once in the middle tier, the country has seen its position drop from 9th place in 2022 to 12th, now just above Vietnam. ASIFMA’s survey assesses economies based on three key parameters: market development, operating environment, and regulatory framework. Among the 13 economies evaluated in 2023, Singapore maintained its top position with an average score of 7.67. Hong Kong followed closely with 7.38, while Australia (7.16) and Taiwan (6.61) secured the third and fourth spots, respectively. Japan, which was previously in the top three, fell to fifth place with a score of 6.6. On the other end of the spectrum, Thailand’s score dwindled to 5.38, reflecting a continuous decline from its 5th place in 2021. The survey highlights that in terms of ease of doing business, Thailand now only ranks higher than Vietnam among the listed nations. In the realm of market development, Thailand showed some strength in payment infrastructure, an improvement from the previous year’s focus on a growing customer base and wealth accrual. However, its competitive landscape and cost efficiency in the operating environment, previously lauded for “cultural and societal factors,” seem to have faltered. Regulatory flexibility, particularly the low restrictions on product and service offerings, remained a notable strong point. The survey, conducted between September and December 2023, found worrying trends for future business expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. Only 40% of respondents indicated plans to expand their operations in Asia-Pacific, marking a 24% decrease from the previous year. The few businesses showing interest largely include securities, asset management, and bond firms. Overall, Thailand's decline poses a troubling sign for its economic landscape and indicates potential challenges for businesses looking to enter or expand in the region.
