Hi, does anyone have recommendations on where to buy or adopt chihuahua or mixed small dog puppies in chiang mai.  I have looked at the rescue sites already and not really seen anything--it doesn't have to be a pure bred chihuahua, or not even a chihuahua at all--we have large dogs outside and am looking for a pretty small dog to be inside for our children to enjoy.

For a variety of reasons, we are staying away from poms, or other longer haired smaller dogs, and dogs like pugs, boxers, as all research will tell you they have consistent breathing and eye problems, especially in hot climates--although, they remain very popular in Thailand.  We have several friends with pugs and french boxers, and while they love them dearly, they all have health problems that necessitate many trips to the vet.

Again, a mixed breed or a rescue is great, just haven't seen any smaller, short hair puppies in the category, but sometimes families raise a litter and are looking for someone to adopt or buy.  Perfect Pedigree will sell one for 25,000 baht!!!  We passed.

Thanks for any recommendations

Not really much help as we are nowhere near CM.

We have two "Thai Style" Chi's (Mr Punch, the dog is nearly 7kg, sister Judy nearer 5kg) both are litter mates and they were free from family.

They are totally bomb-proof just needing to visit the vet once a year for checking and nail clipping, less than 1k Baht for the two including tick medicine.

But, you really do need to have two.

They will be endlessly faithfull and will repell all boarders, size is irrelevant. Our two are fantastic with kids, lots of yapping and barking for about 1 minute, then it's endless kisses for all.

I would avoid chihuahuas as they have too much 'small-man syndrome' in my opinion.

Saying that, any breed can be great or a spoiled failure. It all depends on the humans.

We have a Yorkie, who's got character but respects us.

Full credit to you for being open to adopting. Good luck!

We have a Jack Russell, he's the smaller breed & a fantastic dog, but has loads of energy. They are good with children, my bil in the UK has one with their 5 year old son.

We got him from him FB, & the service from the breeder was excellent, plenty of pre sale & aftercare help. Cost was 6k, Inc preliminary vaccinations & airfare & travel crate.

Yes, PP is rather expensive.

And our boy is very affectionate, & playful.

I am assuming by FB, FACEBOOK, yes--that is where you found your Jack Russell--yes, I belong to several Chiang Mai FB groups for pets, others for rescue animals, and several I have come across of local Thai breeders who sell, rather inexpensively, a variety of puppies--but lately, nothing in the category we are looking for.

Again, I am very happy to have a rescue dog and will keep looking--as mentioned, no need for anything supposedly "pure bred", but it's one of those things that when you see the puppy, you know it was the "one"--having had and raised a lot of dogs over many years, I really do want to find something locally here in the Chiang mai area  so that I can go and see it--while I know it is possible and can work out great, I, personally, would never feel comfortable taking on a puppy that I had not see in person myself--all kinds of signs and understanding you can gain from that direct interaction that can tell you if this puppy is the right fit for your family.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and sharing.
