I first saw it this morning on KhaoSod Thai version.

ThaiRath also covers it.

It's a question of numbers (of death). Sad but true.

Dozed off at 4 AM in Sa Khaeo province. Probably behind the wheel since many hours.

Did he forget his speed pills?

Over a set distance there should be 2 drivers.

Perhaps. But doubtful. That's why if the transport improved it would be a step in the right direction. Drivers...well wait for AI.

I'd like to think if they were in a proper vehicle they would have at least stood half a chance. Certainly when one is catapulted from a vehicle the possibility of survival drops a wee bit. Better vehicles have better impact and crash standards. Never will happen.

Never checked the brakes on the old bullock cart, so why should i starting getting 'picky' now just because i live in the city. You farang have strange ideas, always think of something better.

In the 21st century why is it necessary to transport people hundreds of km simply to get another stamp on their passport?

This could be done by a virtual in and out at a local office, whether run by Immigration or an agency like VFS.

I suspect powerful figures in the van business would try to stop this, but the Government could actually make more money charging a fee for doing this, many hours of worker time could be saved as well as many  of the lives lost in road collisions.

And Thai Immigration would'nt have a clue what you are on about or how to adopt it. "Why should we change for farang"  Like the arrogant Immigration general at a recent meeting with farangs   who said  Quote   TM30 is simple,  they only doing it for our safety. So did'nt they care about our safety since 1978 when this TM30 was first introduced  but ignored till now.     Makes me wonder how such a man became a general in immigration.

GPS on chartered van involved in Sa Kaew smash had been disabled

An inspection of the chartered van, which collided with an 18-wheel truck in Sa Kaew’s Wang Somboon district early on Sunday resulting in 11 deaths and four injuries, revealed that the speed-monitoring GPS device had been disconnected prior to the crash.

The van, bearing the registration 34-0405 Bangkok, also was found to have exceeded the 90km/hour limit on six occasions (between 92km/hour to 106km/hour) since leaving Bangkok for Chanthaburi’s border checkpoint as it travelled through Chachoengsao, Prachin Buri and Sa Kaew, according to the Department of Land Transport's GPS Center.

The information was revealed by Sa Kaew Transport Office's specialist Suriya Chucherd who joined officials from the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office and the Road Accident Victim Protection’s Sa Kaew branch office in inspecting the scene. He said the van was installed with a GPS device as required by law but that signal was disconnected from time to time.

The last signal was detected in Sa Kaew and showed that the van was travelling at 85 km/hour before the signal was lost. The authorities suspect the GPS device was cut to allow the driver to speed. The 18-wheel truck's GPS device showed it was running at to 48km/hour before the crash.

The van, which was transporting Lao workers for visa renewal to the Chanthaburi immigration checkpoint, crashed at around 4am on the Sakaew-Chanthaburi Road. The accident was originally thought to have been caused by the van driver Sansern Sathongkhan, who died in the crash, falling asleep at the wheel, sending the van into the opposite lane and into the path of the oncoming truck.

The 11 bodies of the Thai van driver and 10 Lao migrant passengers will be transferred to the Royal Thai Police's Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bangkok, a police source said.

Sa Kaew govonor Wichit Chatpaisit led officials to visit the three injured victims at the Sa Kaew Crown Prince Hospital, while the slightly-injured truck driver Subin Pengmoo was treated at the Wang Somboon Hospital. Wichit was able to visit only the male passenger Thaothat Pomprasert as two others - identified as Thatthasim Sisisik and Kedsana Silipon - were in surgery.

Only eight of the deceased have been identified including the van driver Sansern and the names of the three others, two males and one female, remain unknown. The seven deceased Lao nationals were identified as Silisack Hatihasinh; Phannthayongsa Bouakheua; Douangmala Bouakheua; Kaisone (last name unknwon); Keokounnavong Sengdeuan; Sillphone Ketsana and Nhouyphathanah Lyvong.

So will the families of these killed be compensated by the bus company or will the bus company claim it to be the fault of the driver therefore his responsibility. Strange hings happen in Thailand.

The race issue rises again. If they had of been Thai maybe junta would have tried harder? As this is a daily event, the media should just make up a standard template to use , all they have to do is put in location and number of fatalities as nothing else will change.

These poor victims are really victims of Thai Immigration and their antiquated system. Why don't they employ someone from overseas if they are not capable of updating their immigration system. Why do workers have to do that long physical journey in this modern age. Wake up Thai Immigration.

I think one of the major problems here in Thailand with van and lorry drivers are the bosses, they never seem to have any regard for mandatory driving hours or rest periods, or even a long off duty period between working days, it's more like if you want your job, do as your told.       But again, there is a major problem with the standard of driving here, speed and overtaking at the wrong place or time, is a common factor, and not being alert to possible hazards ahead.

All the talking and seminars never seem to have any effect, until they seriously address these problems.

Something which annoys me is the fact that we never see the names of the bosses or companies when these accidents happen. We never see the conditions under which these drivers are forced to comply.                       e.g   BOSS..... to Driver  You have got 20 hours to do this trip, dont be late back or else.  Back in under 20 hours you will get a bonus.      I once knew a driver who was driving Kanchanaburi to Sanklaburi  he was a steady driver but late back 4 times and was sacked, his replacement drove the route for 5 months then had an accident.

OMG, you're on a visa trip and had just called your relatives and told them that all is fine..and then the horrible crash.

Too many innocent people have to die, while the inane live a life of luxury, wealth and selfishness.

The ones where the noses increase immensely when they lie. And they do that always. RIP and a fully recovery for the others. RIP- it's so fragging sad.

\My thoughts are with their relatives and friends. No words can describe how many problems have started for people who are somehow related to them.

And then the poor people have it even much more difficult when life's already way too hard. They left the country to make some money to support their families and got killed in a very brutal way, like blown away with a gun. And then so many, it's such a weird tragedy.

I don't care if their brakes were at fault. - That's the "wannabe" government's responsibility. All good job's taken by soldiers and their mates.

I also don't give a flying kangaroo on the lies if he fell asleep- again the government's fault not to take that seriously enough to do something against it. They "should" make the laws and the cops help a bit to enforce them.

It has gotten worse and less people have money to live on.

Thanks to the Pinocchio from Elm Street.

The shi_e has already started to hit the fan, methinks.

and still the govt does nothing to stop this carnage, the vans are death machines and the drivers need to be properly tested and licensed. The vans need to be speed limited to 100k at most and driving times need to be adhered to, maximum time behind the wheel needs to be made mandatory with random testing for drugs & alcohol. The amount of accidents and deaths vans cause is beyond a joke

Problem is if you take all the traffic of the road that is not safe or not licence motorcycles as well 70% of the population would not be able to work ?

exactly, they are a danger to life, I have had several close calls in them, I won't get in them now unless I am desperate.

The govt is more interested in helping health insurance companies fleece expats and tourists.

More interested in TM 30 and driving tourists out of Thailand.

Not the land of smiles anymore. the land of sorrow.

Another tragic event RIP all.

Watching channel 8 Thai news for an hour and nothing but horrible sad murders and road rage beatings.

Seems Thais love this, they love soaps where people shoot and bash each other and all the drama.

The roads are just one big tragic soap, only it is real.

"big traffic soap" you couldn't dream up a script that comes anywhere near to real life on Thai roads.

This has nothing to do with the accidents. It's almost always the drivers fault.  Had they checked the brakes, tires, if the steering wheel was fastened properly, and not falling asleep, there wouldn't so much accidents. But these are Thai drivers and you can't expect too much. Maybe after 100 years or so, one can expect some kind of improvement.

Only 1 Thai dead nothing to see here move along.
