Thammasat teachers, students clean garbage from canal

Some 100 teachers and students of Thammasat University (TU)'s Rangsit Campus as well as community volunteers on Sunday attended a garbage-collection activity riding kayaks and two boats at Khlong 1 Canal area in Pathum Thani province.

 

 

The group, led by university deputy rector Parinya Thewanarumitkul and Pathum Thani MP Anawin Ratanasataporn from the Future Forward Party, collected garbage and removed water hyacinth in the area behind Wan Khru 2502 School in Khlong Luang district. 

 

The activity was also meant to raise public awareness against littering or discharging wastewater into the canal.

This only has value as promo for the cause. It helps get into minds outside TU that we should do more. You can see a load of trash ignored in the picture. I bet if you go there today that is still piled all along canal. Picking up the floating stuff is no enough. Those canals have plastic floating on top and throughout to the floor of the canals. A sincere effort would have everyone totally dirty.

 

Thammasat has plenty of trash on it's campus. Students, teachers and staff won't bend over to pick up a single piece  unless maybe they drop it. You could sit there all day and you won't find one person pick up a single piece. One thing that doesn't help is there usually aren't any bins around at all. In fact for a more than a decade the back of Thammasat Rangsit had trash scattered all over the place and dumped by Thammasat itself. Just recently they plowed dirt over it. One good thing Thammasat does do is not allow the 10 7Elevens on campus to use plastic bags. Thammasat has name-power to across Thailand to promote but it needs to do more and needs to get its students to actually take action as individuals changing their habits, That's going to be hard to do. But as everyone knows, it's not a TU issue; it's a culture issue across the nation.

So they only cleaned the floating plastic?

Another ''big show'' ...why does every good deed in Thailand need a photo opp,with thumbs up and a free t-shirt.....JUST DO IT

Why hasn't TAT made this an event for Western tourists? 

Kudos to all of them for making an effort.

So what are YOU doing about it besides complaining?

I for one am happy to see the kids involved in cleaning the environment, even if it is only in a small way. A long voyage starts with a single step. 

At least someone is doing something, and maybe it will motivate a few people
