They should tell all the Chinese whom want to buy a condo here by the way you have to report like you are on probation every time your come back to you home or spend the night away from it.

Not even China has this stupid law on foreigners.

With this China loving 'government' there will be an exception for chinese owning landlords of any TM30 obligations.

I think it's more of an issue for the Chinese landlord (condo owner) rather than the tenant. In absentia landlords are common enough but I think the newbie Chinese Airbnb magnate would be loath to register his Thai property ownership with any local government agency lest they pass on that information to his own government agencies. There's a reason why the Russians and now the Chinese are getting into Thai condo ownership. The Indians will be next.

The article in the OP mentions the paltry 6,000 signatures on the Isaan-centric petition which doesn't amount to much. The employers of foreign workers that need to take a day off work to file a TM30 would need to get onboard to add any weight to this. However, I think it is much more likely that employers have already struck deals with their local immigration chiefs to get these done en bloc. How else to explain a Thai agent dropping off a bundle of Myanmar passports at the local immigration and simply coming back later to pick them up; no receipts. no money changing hands in the front office, no names, etc..

China has one of the most extensive surveillance and facial recognition systems in the world. What they ought to be doing is selling their technology to Thailand to blanket the country with cameras. Then no one would need to file a TM30 ever.

Its great to see some international press coverage etc but they appear to get it wrong with their understanding of TM30.

Its a report of a foreigner arrival, not their departure from a property.

Nah.. a simple, scanable barcode tattoo inside the left wrist... except for the ladies where it's on the uppermost, inner left thigh.

 

I wouldn't mind hanging around for 45 minutes in immigration lines if that were the case.

Yes thats right but its only an arrival/stay that gets reported, the hilton hotel or a landlord doesnt tell immigration I have moved/left, the next place I stay at tells immigration.

I own a home in CM and have a couple of rental properties also.

I'm hoping that this TM30 thing goes away. In the past we only TM30'd the tenant once, that was it. I'm surprised that we have not heard from any Thai property owners on this issue yet.

sure they do......same-same but different.  the difference is that it's managed effectively and it's very simple to meet the requirements.  it's also nice that the requirements are known, well-publicized, and the rules are generally followed.

 

hotels/guesthouses/hostels register with local police to get authorization to board foreign guests.  hotel loads registration software package onto front desk computer to automatically update the police registry online.  hotels have mini scanners to scan passports/id cards.  it's all done in a minute or two while standing at the hotel registration desk.

 

system is managed by local police.  if you stay at a friend's house (or at a non-authorized cheap hotel), a trip to the local cop shop, usually a 5-minute walk away, must be done within 24 hours.  (some locales with smaller staff ask for next business day, so can wait til after a weekend).

 

i've registered using a rental contract, other times with a copy of friend's id card.  rarely takes more than a few minutes.  returning from outside china normally does not require re-registration if returning to same residence.  it's a huge country, so of course others have different experiences.

I'm sure that, if anything, only 'pressure' from the Chinese (press or government) could force the Thais to rescind this antiquated law...

No need to fill a TM 30 in China, but as tourist (and not staying in a hotel),you have to register at a local police station within 24hrs. I missed it last time and my friend living there got a hectic phone call from his office, that we have to go there NOW. A few police officers knocked at his condo 26hrs after my arrival, but we weren`t there ????

 

If I would have failed to go there, I would`ve been blacklisted to enter the country the next time. So while it just for tourists, we should be happy they are still far from that stage in Thailand.

Read the other day by 2020 China will have one camera for every two people, makes u think.

Yeah, there's two ways to look at it I guess.

 

You look at it as "it could be much worse".

 

I look at it as "it could be much better".

 

Mine is unrealistic in today's Thailand, so I left. Won't change basic principles due to authoritarian regimes. 

 

It's exactly the same as saying: "there are people poorer than me so I should be happy".

 

I know a lot of people richer than me and I prefer that direction forward. Otherwise, I am limiting myself.

 

People that do wish to stay, however, will have to "follow the laws", whatever those may be. 

 

But then again, each person is different, they can put in balance the pros and cons and make their own decisions.

I would prefer a camera on my face than the tm30 thing that can't be done without the landlord.
