Urine: "Dr Kidney" says drinking your own is taking the pee!

The issue of drinking your own urine for health benefits is all over Thailand. There were TV panel show discussions yesterday with members of the public proudly saying they love the stuff.

And internet forums have gone viral with stories of people downing gallons of their own wee.

But a famous kidney doctor has cautioned about the practice saying the very thought makes him want to throw up.

Dr Anuttorn Jittinan - former head of Thailand's national kidney association - went on Facebook to say: "Please stop promoting the idea of drinking your own urine".

He said that recent TV and online comments were critical of doctors for not knowing what they are talking about and he admitted that he does not have all the proof in the arguments.

What he does know, he said, is that the chemical constituents in urine are things rejected by the kidneys. If there is any benefit in urine it would be a minimal amount of minerals that the body can't cope with.

The problem is not with what is rejected by the kidneys as such but the fact that the bladder is in close proximity to the rectum and thus the urine can pick up diseases.

Drinking this or putting it on the face or in the eyes is something that Dr Anuttorn would not do.

"I've never drunk my own urine and I never will," he said. "In fact just the thought of it makes me want to vomit".

He rejected the idea of drinking urine as nonsensical...simply taking the pee.

Urin is normally aseptic but due to the close proximity between rectal opening and urethral opening, the urin could become contaminated with bacterias. But even non contaminated urin is unhealthy, which I believe most people understand.

Finally; someone with common sense.

And a medical doctor on top of that.

Those with uro- and copro-desires should abstain or see a psychiatrist, preferably both.

But I am just a normal person, who does not care about abnormalities shown on the internet. Even avoid them.

Maybe I am not normal any longer and have a delayed senility syndrome ?

If it's been rejected by the body, any water soluble nutrients in the urine is just not needed - at that point in time.  However, urine drinking, provided no alcohol has been consumed, has found devotees because the urine could contain dissolved vitamins e.g. B12 etc that the body could need at a future point.

In some ways, good nutrition points to a regime that needs to be as varied as possible, so that the body, through a complex maze of absorption, takes what it needs to function properly.

So an every day diet of cornflakes and milk at breakfast, a BLT and yogurt at lunch, and meat and two veg at dinner could mean an overdose of nutrition that would be rejected, and a lack of nutrients otherwise needed.

Apart from the fact that the above example is not the healthiest.

Health Department warns public about urine drinking craze

By The Nation

The Department of Health Tuesday warned the public against following the example of several Thais in drinking urine and using it to wash their faces, a practice that has become a craze among Facebook users.

Doctor Amporn Benjapolphithak, deputy director general of the department, warned that the sex organs and anus tend to carry a lot of germs that contaminate the urine and make it dangerous to drink and use as a face or eye wash, as being promoted by Facebook users.

Such practices became the talk of the town after a Facebook user posted that a school in Khon Kaen’s Phol district used urine mixed with herbs and gave it to students to drink to cure stomach pains.

Another resident in Ratchaburi’s Ban Pong district posted on her Facebook wall that she regularly drank urine and used it to wash her eyes and wounds while a nurse has posted that she also drank urine and also boiled and distilled urine and used it to wash wounds of patients.

A TV channel interviewed several of those who claimed in Facebook posts to drink their own urine and wash their faces with it.

Amporn said it was true that urine was used as a medicine during the Greek and Roman empires but pointed out that the average life span of its population was between 30 to 40 years. She noted that medical technology has advanced a lot over the centuries and that no modern medical studies had endorsed the use of urine as a cure for disease.

She added that in ancient days, clean drinking water was hard to find, so the urine was treated as water by some people.

Amporn explained that cream for treating pimples contains urea, a substance found in the urine, and that it would be safer to buy this inexpensive cream rather than use possibly contaminated urine to watch their faces.

She added that urine is a kind of waste discharged from the body and is not for drinking.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stressed that body wastes could not be eaten or drunk but added that the Public Health Ministry would not issue a formal announcement.

A lone voice of reason in the wilderness of nonsense. The kidneys are responsible for filtering out toxins within the body, and releasing them in the form of urine. So, this ninnie is asking the kidneys to work overtime, by intentionally ingesting his urine.

Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. The production of urine involves highly complex steps of excretion and re-absorption. This process is necessary to maintain a stable balance of body chemicals.

It's ok. His kidneys can work overtime.

It makes up for his brain which is permanently malfunctioning

I'm beginning to understand, why some Thai food has such a bad smell, and why even Thais in their 30s and 40s have pimples and acne worse than teenagers: use of pee...
