Former UK PM John Major joins legal action to block Johnson suspending parliament

LONDON (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister John Major has asked to join legal action to try to block current Prime Minister Boris Johnson from suspending parliament before Brexit.

Major, prime minister from 1990 to 1997, said he would join anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller in pursuing a judicial review of the order to close parliament from mid September to mid October.

“In view of the imminence of the prorogation – and to avoid duplication of effort, and taking up the Court’s time through repetition – I intend to seek the Court’s permission to intervene in the claim already initiated by Gina Miller, rather than to commence separate proceedings,” Major said.

“If granted permission to intervene, I intend to seek to assist the court from the perspective of having served in government as a minister and prime minister,” he said in a statement.

If fidelity is a quality you feel is important in your PM, wait until you hear about the current one we're lumbered with.

People forget that John Major prorogued parliament himself to force through the Maastrict Treaty ... hypocrite. People never look back into the past. Even Corbyn backed proroguing parliament even earlier than that too. I could go on ... but won't out of not disrespecting posters' intelligence.

John Major was the Hypocrite that started all this Brexit mess, by his Maastricht Treaty, He was not a fit P.M. and should keep his nose out of politics.

Closing Parliament for a while might be a good idea, It would give some MP's a chance to go back to school, and learn about politics, Corbyn has a lot to learn, and Abbot needs maths lessons as well.

And, Miller, you know who's financially backing her, the guy who made a killing last time round, obviously looking to make another financial huge profit.

John Major, the last of the decent Tory leaders.

At least he is putting country before party, something rare nowadays.

Typical leave-moaner propaganda. Boris is Trump's poodle and is being paid by Lord Bamford to subvert democracy where 63% did not vote for BREXIT and prorogue parliament for the longest time on history (34days). John Major only did that for 19 days and since 2010, the average time has only been around 6 days. Shutting down Parliament for 5 weeks at a time is an afront to democracy and is purely to satisfy the Russians, Trump and the rest who have financed the campaign to destroy the EU.

According to Brexit logic, this man should still be the PM.  He was elected in 1992 - earlier than any other living former PM, and no further elections should have been held to see if the people had changed their minds following that.

see he'll have to tread warily... not spilling any bean secrets

Usually 2-3 days rather then the 23 Boris has. And normally to give parliament a respite before a new Queen's speech which introduces a government's new agenda rather than in the middle of the most crucial decision since WW2 and the biggest constitutional mess ever.

But of course, Boris says it's not connected to Brexit or preventing parliament outlawing a no deal. And everyone knows, Boris never lies hahaha!

Remainers keep reminding us that Boris is a buffoon, I think they are beginning to realise he is anything but.

Spitting Image was hilarious. I can still remember Prince Philip in full Naval rig with a blunderbus on one shoulder and a Salmon full of holes on the other...

He was president of the WWF at the time ????

Ah, the grey man speaks. The horror, the horror.

If he is putting the country first, shouldn't he be for exit?

Seems a general election is the on!y way to clear this mess up. The Tories should deselect any remainer MP and the Brexit party field candidates in any and every constituency where a Labour remainer sits where the vote was to leave. Meanwhile the £ continues to do expats in Thailand no favours so just get on with it!
