Iran says it closes gaps with France in talks on nuclear deal

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran and France’s views have become closer over Tehran’s nuclear deal, mainly after phone calls between President Hassan Rouhani and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Iran’s government spokesman said on Monday.

 

“Fortunately the points of views have become closer on many issues and now technical discussions are being held on ways to carry out the Europeans’ commitments (in the nuclear deal),” the spokesman, Ali Rabiei, said in remarks carried by state television, without giving details.

 

Since the United States pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal last year, European parties to the pact have been trying to convince Iran to remain compliant by promising to shield its economic interests from U.S. sanctions.

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron has talked with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and urged Tehran to show restraint amid rising tensions in the region.

Macron's office said Saturday that the French leader asked Iran to "take necessary measures" to encourage negotiations in Yemen's war and urged Iran to show "the greatest restraint in Lebanon so that nothing compromises stability in this moment of great tension."

The tense standoff between Israel and Iran around Lebanon has pushed the bitter adversaries closer toward open, armed conflict in recent weeks.

Let me wish Macron has a bit of Talleyrand's talents (just don't shake his hand, he prefers a hug anyway, LOL), as, the ones versed in History, will know, he was possibly the most influential diplomate of the XIXth century, and his achievements are still determinant in the present Europe. Even though some of the participating nations are part of NATO, Trump might use such announcement to try to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty by Presidential Order. And perhaps follow with some economic sanctions against et al.

Trump isn't the one who cares about Iran and the people inside the government that do care about Iran are also deeply committed to NATO so I find that scenario highly suspect. And it is highly unlikely Trump himself would want to deviate from his indirect attack on NATO that has proven so highly effective thus far. Trump knew that if he went after NATO directly there would be too much backlash from the Establishment Elites so he astutely focused instead on the spending issue, which is the perfect wedge. Either the Western European countries can massively increase their defense budgets, which would likely lead to anti-NATO parties such as AfD or the Greens taking power and a massive reduction of support for NATO on the European end, or they can refuse to pay and there is a massive reduction for support of NATO among the American public. Either way, NATO is undermined and Trump all the while can maintain that he is just trying to "strengthen" NATO.

But as we have seen with China economic sanctions are a two way thing.

As far as I understand things Trump and his administration are aware of these efforts. So far they haven't called them out, or denounced them. I think that for Trump, the main thing would be being able to present any outcome as a "great success". Things dragging on, and possibly getting to either a confrontation or Iran staying the current course do not benefit him much at this point.

I doubt you've got any particular insight as to what Trump thinks or why he does stuff. And I'll say the same thing about Trump himself.

 

What you suggest would imply patience, delay of gratification, long term planning, command of details, and understanding of nuance. None of these are readily associated with Trump.

The US pulling out of NATO would sure make the world a lot safer for everyone. Let the Yanks enjoy life behind their wall.
