A Thai woman was arrested in Samut Sakhon late Wednesday night for allegedly working for a Chinese gang’s call centre to deceive other Thais back in 2010.

Police from the Economic Crime Suppression Division arrested Noppassorn Meeboontham, 42, in Tambon Bang Nam Jued in Muang district.

She was charged with working for a call centre gang in the Chang An area of Kwangtung during which she convinced Thais to transfer money to the gang between February and April 2010, causing damage worth some Bt861,000. The gang called the victims from China on the pretext of being officials of the central bank and telling the victims they had outstanding credit card debt.

On April 8 2010, Thai police sought help from their Chinese counterparts to arrest 15 Thai and Chinese suspects in Chang An. Seven more suspects were later arrested and Noppassorn was the last suspect to be rounded up, said Pol Lt Col Phuwadet Julkasewee, commander of the Economic Crime Suppression Subdivision 5.

After the arrest, Noppassorn said she was lured to work as a maid in China but later found out that the job involved calling and deceiving fellow Thais.

Were they all "maids"? Just curious.

Extradition to Thailand? I guess the 50+ Chinese doing the same in Thailand to Chinese are going to China. Makes me think of the HK people who don't want extradition to China. I wonder if that would apply in cases of mainland Chinese running these scams from HK. Would Thailand send a Thai to China for these crimes?

Ok, let's break this scam down. Someone calls you, and breaks the news to you that you have outstanding credit card debt. So, what is your first move as a consumer? You go online, and check your card accounts, look at the balances, see if anything is out of order, overdue, etc. Right? Why would someone just transfer money without taking some precautions, asking alot of questions, and checking out the claim?

After the arrest, Noppassorn said she was lured to work as a maid in China but later found out that the job involved calling and deceiving fellow Thais.

Really? Lured to work as a maid? Here in Thailand? And when she found out it was not a "maid" position, she could not just walk away? Were they holding her prisoner, with a gun to her head? Or was the lure of a fat commission just too much to resist, and now that she was found out, she cannot admit guilt? Cannot take responsibility? Cannot man up?
