Dengue fever has so far this year claimed 89 lives and affected 81,500 people in Thailand, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Monday (September 9) as it called on members of the public to help destroy mosquito breeding grounds and also dispatched officials to fumigate several areas.

Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, DDC director general, said dengue infections have lowered in provinces like Nakhon Nayok, Trat, Prachin Buri, Amnat Charoen, Beung Kan and Chumphon thanks to prevention and control measures as well as people’s cooperation in suppressing the propagation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the dengue virus.

Suwannachai, citing DDC's latest report showing that 81,500 people had been infected by dengue fever and 89 had died from January 1 to September 3, said most of the patients were small children, youths and young adults.

He said people should immediately seek medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms such as high fever that does not come down in a day or two, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain as well as a skin rash that appears two to five days after the onset of the fever. He has also cautioned people against taking aspirin and ibuprofen as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

ASIF people with CAD dont know this? OMG there are so many fools who make off the cuff comments. Cardiologists would be better quoted.

So start an education campaign in every school, show students what to look for & how to eradicate it at home.

Show a 5 minute information shot before every movie is played at the cinemas... start to make people aware of the dangers and how to minimise it.

And charge 1000b for a cigarette lighter

The  whole region is a  mosquito breeding ground, it is what it is.

And farangs still want to come and settle in Thailand. Thailand has laid out the perfect trap by opening brothels fronting as bars throughout the nation and pimping girls for marriage. Why they would want to change?

that is a sudden jump from the previously quoted just 2 months ago 45 deaths and 55k hospitalised.

probably statistics were not full or made up on purpose as not to scare foreign tourists.

there are another 4 months of wet climate, so this would be minimum another 30% more victims.

there is a vaccine available in thailand from 2017, not cheap, but the first one and effective.

In Philippines there was government program vaccinating 800k children in endemic areas. If thai government cared they would roll out such program, and on an even bigger scale, as thailand is richer. Would they rather spend on armaments for army to keep population under full control?

the problem with the vaccine is that a candidate should be in a certain age range and have had prior exposure.  not a one size fits all solution currently

Correct ive done it for years. Or sprinkle a small amount of Paramephos into the water, works 100%  I see mosquitoes floating on the water dead.

yes, 9 to 45 years old.

i did get vaccinated after my first dengue and  I am over 45.

The concept behind this vaccine is that in tropics the chance for getting infected is every 9 years. As vaccine should not be given to those, who never been sick, the age pinned to 9 years. At age of 45 everybody got already infected 4 times (from age 9 to 36). Malaria has only 4 strains.

Absolute nonsense. I've lived well over 45 years in the tropics and have never contracted dengue. What has malaria got to with this? May as well mention Chikungunya, Barmah Forest, Ross River and many other mosquito borne diseases.

There is so much nonsense written on tv about Dengue too.

If you were infected yourself there are only two things to think of:

1.  Stay away from the mozzies in the future.

2.  Don't believe in this vaccine thing.

OK, and stay alive.

In the literature it seems to be a common and simple problem ...

No. That's a lie.
