Metronidazole - Gum Infection

Hi guys.  I've got an incredibly slow coming wisdom tooth (over 10 years now!).  Twice in the last 5 years the gum area around it has gotten infected and the dentist in the UK has prescribed a weeks course of metronidazole which clears it up in around 3-4 days.

I've got the same infection again so I've gone and got a weeks course from the pharmacy.  But they've told me to take 3 a day (400mg tabs) when I'm 99% sure that in the UK I was taking 1 a day, but unsure of the mg.  I know metronidazole is a strong antibiotic so I'm a little apprehensive to take that many.   I might just take 1 a day for 7 days and see what happens?

What would you guys advise?  And yes I know, medical advice on a forum like this should be taken with a pinch of salt.  Thanks

Yeah so according to that, for gum infections 200mg 3 times a day.  She's given me 400mg and says 3 times a day. That's double the dose!  ????

 

Thanks that's a big help.  I'm gonna get someone to call my dentist in the UK. I'm not risking it haha

Did they understand that is for gum infection?

In the leaflet you find much higher dose for other infections.

I wouldn't if I were you. If you want a second opinion, then get one. Under dosing with any antibiotic runs the risk of the infection becoming resistant.

Got hold of my dentist. 400mg twice a day with meals.  All sorted ????

why don't you go to a dentist instead?

It may save your tooth and lot of trouble. I have a dental center that is top-noch, a bit pricey, I agree. but you are gambling with your teeth....
