If you are over 50 you can go down that retirement route with 800,000 Bt in a bank in Thailand for 3 months prior to application.

Yes. The Retirement visa is a hassle free option compared to the Marriage visa.

Always choose the Retirement visa if you have the money.

What hassle? 2 days ago I renewed my marriage visa. I submitted my papers and after 10 minutes everything was done. No questions asked either to my wife nor to me. Middle of April I will get the final approval. No need to go in person; one can send a messanger for the pick up. (Marriage visa since 4 years and working in a Thai company)

It is more hassle because there are more papers to submit and the approval stamp is not immediate

Because of Songkran I decided to send one of our messengers today to get my final 1-year visa - 7 days ahead of the 18th april deadline.

Like expected no problems with the final approval until April 2nd 2008.

So I really can say - and this since several years - NO HASSLE AT ALL with a marriag visa.

Thanks wca for your post.

I knew that I can't be the only one to have my "marriage' visa extensions without problems.

(not even the wife present if she's working) :o

hgma, I believe your are talking about annual extension of stay, not about a visa.

If you had an annual extension of stay approved before October 1, 2006 for support of Thai wife you can apply for a new annual extension with 400k in the bank for the reason of living with your Thai wife. This is the so-called grandfather clause.

It is true that an extension of stay for retirement is less “hassle”. If you want to change to that then simply indicate “retirement” as the reason for your application when the time comes to submit your next application. You will have to bring your wife along because Immigration will want her to confirm that she understands what you are doing, but this will be the last time that you will depend on your wife for your extension. The other advantage, as I believe you already know, is that approval of an extension for retirement is immediate. Remember, though, that on a retirement extension you are unlikely to get a work permit, if this should be important for you.

In the unlikely event that your wife should not give her agreement you go abroad, get an new non-O visa to visit your wife, then apply for your extension for retirement without the need for your wife to be present.
