I propose an experiment. For one week, Then observe the effect to climate. You know, real world experimenting instead of tweaking a model that's never been put through it's paces. After you got repeatable results, then I'll believe the model has merit. Until then, it's a theory.

"let's spew out as much CO2 as the mankind can muster."

And how do you think we got to the point we are now, where the icecaps and glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate, permafrost is thawing for the first time in tens of thousands of years and spewing out methane in a deadly positive feedback loop and the earth's temperature is rising at a faster rate than has been known since the dawn of mankind, leading to rising numbers of climate disasters year on year?

You deniers are straight out of Mike Judge's Geniocracy and unlike your byline claim, you don't even understand sarcasm. ????

The whole 97% thing I’d BS anyway. Ever seen the way it was calculated?

In any event, climate change is an industry, with no shortage of people getting rich.

Someone was moaning about oil companies getting subsidies, but you notice they never provide an example.

The oil companies get the lion’s share of renewable energy subsidies, how funny is that?

I think I missed the days when they pumped the atmosphere full of CO2 and then removed it, must've been multiple times since it's been tested and retested.

The evidence that even explaining it in basic English language is still too hard to get for you deniers. Wonder if Braille would help in this case?

Here's one from UK:

Now how sad is that....for the climate and environment? ????

Yes, climate change is an industry.....and the fossil fuel industry has been both the major cause and one of the biggest beneficiaries, as you argue yourself. We live in perverse times, but they are coming to an end very soon, when fossil fuels in the ground will become stranded assets and share prices will dip as a result. Whether the change that is coming will come in time to save mankind, is currently being debated by serious scientists, social and natural.

Me no undahstaan, I think I need about 5000 more ad hominems to get the gist.

And there you have it, it's a religion with it's own knights of the order, spewing holy wrath from their nostrils as they ride on forth to conquer the lands of the evil pagans.

It's called climate change. How do you think we got the last ice age?

So the people that buy and use oil bear none of the responsibility?

You’re a hypocrite.

As long as the sun shines,  this planet will last for millions of years, if we can avoid being hit by a meteor.  The climate will change and adapt as it has been doing for millions of years. Maybe some parts of the planet will be uninhabitable and people will just relocate and life will go on.

Yes we can stop the plastic and all that, and cut down less trees.  Maybe eat more insects or whatever, but life will go on.

You forgot the "crusade" cliché ????

Unpleasant truths are always more difficult to accept than pleasant untruths. By our own human nature, we are inclined to believe easier what we like to hear, than what we don't like to hear. That's why so many aging farang men get screwed so easily in LOS, for example.

Yes, some like to hear they are saving the world by taking plastic bags from consumers, and that this somehow gives their life meaning.

Others just see them as fools with empty lives.

The same people saving the world from global warming by taking our plastic bags were saving the world from the ice age by taking our paper bags and giving us plastic.

This time for sure, right?

OK but that's not the point, the point is survival of human kind.

That's the optimistic scenario. A more realistic one would be that most of the planet will "slowly" become uninhabitable, surviving people will keep squashing tighter and tighter, among ever worsening famines and wars, on the remaining habitable parts, until also those parts will become uninhabitable and human kind will eventually free from its noxious presence the scorched and flooded wreck of this beautiful planet. Then there's the pessimistic scenario: same as above, but not so "slowly". So: no, human life will not go on. As a great historian once wrote: "Nature had the first word. It will have also the last one".

All of this mostly due to the triumph of the large scale republican model which, in just about 250 years (less than a nanosecond in astronomical terms) brought humanity back to a point of uncivilized state, where it isn't even able to deal with a question as elementary as the correct use of plastic bags. Someone should explain this to those brave kids whose only fault is to have been born in the wrong age.

Yes, all the talk of overpopulation, worldwide famine and endless wars over fertile crop lands sounds real familiar. Heard it all back in the ‘70s, meanwhile, people on average are living better and longer than ever, due for the most part to capitalism.

No, the optimistic view is that if indeed the Earth is warming, which not many people dispute, it will increase growth cycles.

You know we are on track to have fewer hurricanes in the first twenty years of this century than the last twenty years of the last?

What makes them brave, are they in some danger? Are the evil oil companies going to attack them?

Yes, they (and all lefties) should have been born 150 years ago when life for most people was short and hard.

What have you given up?

This is all to be demonstrated, especially the "better" part. Then of course people may have different opinions on what makes life good and worth living.

They may not be just acting eventually.

Protest in any form against development on the basis of protecting the environment or communities in Thailand usually are short-lived, quite literally.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/09/thai-activists-risk-murder-abduction-fight-land-rights-190918060803825.html

Never put it past a greedy thai business owner to sell out an entire generation in exchange for a few baht and a continued comfortable existence.

Look, in my case you are totally off the track, it would be faster to list what I have not given up.

How about some examples? No doubt too many to list?

Air travel?
Buy food?
Use electricity?
Telephone?
Healthcare?
Own a bicycle?
Use condoms?
Have a telephone?
Computer?

Please, let us know what you’re doing without.

I know. Like Gore's very unpleasant truth of pulling the finest con in the millenia, doesn't get better than profiting off an invisible gas we're surrounded with. I have full respect for his skills.

I think Thunberg can be excused though, she's too young to be a survivor of the Great Ozone Hole and the New Ice Age and to know it ain't a big deal, armageddon has been greatly exaggerated. Some old farts around here have probably survived even more extinction level events in their lives.

I know, a couple of degrees of warming is a disaster. Never mind the yearly variation up north is about 50 degrees, they call them seasons.

The real danger is Africans breeding like rabbits. That leads to deforestation due to the land being used for farming, which will cause the desert area to expand and eventually ther will be mass migrations to escape the self created famine, at which point the ones that are left of western civilization must decide to become extinct or start shooting at the invading hordes. That is 100% man made and competely preventable. Offer sterilization for the males for some $.

I'll jump in and share my own lifestyle changes and actions hoping others will share likewise for ideas and inspiration.

1. I have quit smoking 54 days ago, and part of my motivation is the impact of that useless habit on the environment (smoke, trash, manufacturing, & packaging & transport to sell points)

2.Reading that the meat industry had a larger negative impact than transport, I have become a vegetarian. I avoid processed foods as much as possible. Cooking from whole ingredients. Two of my daily meals are raw, using no gas or electricity besides keeping the food in the fridge. Instead of buying ice cream at 7-11 I make my own by putting frozen bananas in a blender, or eat frozen banana Popsicles.

3. I cannot entirely  avoid air travel, but otherwise I usually walk or use public transport. I never ride a Moto taxi. I do not own either a car or a scooter.

4.As much as Bangkok air quality allows it I use fans rather than AC

5. When travelling solo, I stay at the nicer Hostels rather than in a private room thus sharing the cooling and lighting usage.

6.I carry my own reusable bags and a reusable bottle for the coffee shop that bottle is large and very noticeable (to broadcast the message).

6. I turn off the router when not actively online. I don't need those real-time notifications anyway.

7. I do not buy overly packaged foods, aim at buying local products, buy organic as much as budget allows.

8. I use libraries and second hand bookshops.

9. I wash my windows with vinegar instead of Windex. I am looking into similar ways to reduce chemicals and to reduce waste.

I am not perfect, nor do I want to give everything up. I still enjoy my Canadian maple syrup. I keep thinking of other lifestyle hacks I could make and I hope to find more ideas below soon.

You brought up the “republican model” and blamed it for the impending doom, but your socialist ideals are off topic?

First I don't have socialist ideals. Second, that's right: they would be off topic here. Both liberal and socialist ideals are fruits of the same plant. I'm not debating on what fruit is better, I'm saying that the plant is poisonous.

Some of the things you listed I actually gave up. All others I'm consuming or using as little and as consciously as humanly possible. I'm never wasting or abusing of anything. If I told you how tiny is my monthly power bill, for example, I'm sure you wouldn't believe it. I hope you can state the same about yourself.
