I have had the following from various bods and local Thai Consulate. Myself and my female partner planning to retire in LOS in the near future. (by the way LOS = Land of smiles or sunshine?) I am over 50 but partner is under 50.

1) Go to consulate here in UK and get multiple non immigrant O visa.

( 4x90 day lasting 12 month in total)

2) When in Thailand transfer 800.000 baht into local bank.

Can I transfer before I leave the UK?

3) Within the first week there, apply for retirement visa.

Must have CRB check, letter from our Doc showing we has no infectious disease. A

notarised statement that I and my dependant partner have been together for x years.

4) On day 89 leave LOS for a day and return for our second period of our multiple visa.

5) During this second period of visa. I should have received my retirement visa showing

that I also have a depandant partner.

6) We then do not have to exit LOS again but report to the local immigrant office every 30 days (or is it every 90 days?) and pay 1900 baht. (is that each?)

7) At the end of 12 months I have to show that there is 800,000 baht in the bank and continue

reporting every 30 or 90 days.

8) After three years, one can apply for permanent residency. Application cost 7,600 baht. If ok

resident permit 191,000 baht! Again is that each?

Is my understanding above correct?

1. Correct.

2. If you already have an account with a Thai bank, you can make the remittance already before your arrival in Thailand, if you wish. In this case, you would need only a single-entry non-O visa.

3.1. At the Immigration office, you do not apply for a retirement visa; you apply for an annual extension of stay for the reason of retirement. No CRB check, no medical certificate needed.

3.2. No notarised statement about the period of your cohabitation with your partner needed. Unless your partner is your wife, she cannot get an annual extension of stay as your dependent.

4. If you are on a multiple-entry visa (see point 2 above) and get tired of border runs every 90 days, you can apply for your annual extension of stay during the last 30 days of any 90-day entry.

5. No annual extension on the basis of being a dependent “partner”, unless she is your wife.

6. After you have your annual extension, the report to Immigration every 90 days is to report your current address. No fee collected by Immigration.

7. Correct, but you must show evidence that your bank balance was not less than 800k for at least three months before the new application for extension of stay.

8. No. You will not qualify for Permanent Residency. This is for people who can show that they worked and paid taxes in Thailand for at least three years and meet many other requirements. See this topic pinned at the top of the forum.

LOS generally is used as "Land of Smiles."

But, I've seen it used with varying degrees of frustration and/or irony as Land of Stupidity. :o
