Chinese tourists are heading back to Thailand at last

BANGKOK: The number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand topped one million in August for the first time in six months, brightening an otherwise dim outlook for the nation’s economy.

Chinese arrivals surged almost 19% to 1.03 million during the month compared with a year earlier, Tourism Ministry data showed Wednesday. Overall visitor growth of 7.4% was the strongest this year.

"It’s a positive surprise for the Thai tourism industry, especially with Chinese arrivals reaching a million,” said Kampon Adireksombat, Bangkok-based head of economic and financial market research at Siam Commercial Bank Pcl.

Everything is fixed, thanks to the TAT. Now, pass that blunt............

I don't know, sometimes i get the feelings that the guys in the TAT just letting go announcements regarding tourism in Thailand according to how they feel and to try to spruke the industry with all sorts of figures and numbers pulled pretty much out of their collective derrieres...

the spin starts here, and here and there and....

Must be true, TAT says so

Oh well, have to say I'm happy not to be there then. Last time I went to Koh Larn the Chinese covered the beach to the extent it was not a pleasant experience, and the speed boats arriving and departing every 5 minutes ruined any chance of a pleasant relaxing day.

It is golden week next week.  If they do not show up next week in big numbers that will be a telling sign.  But like TAT said, you get more fun in neighboring countries.   They will probably not be going to HOng Kong even though hotel prices at a historic low.

Last week "OMG OMG THE CHINESE ARE LEAVING!"

This week "Yay, the Chinese are coming!"

Really? How do those TAT people sleep at night?

I have 2 Thai friends that are Licensed Chinese Guides and they haven't had a tour in 6 weeks or more (they where previously turning down tours before since they were so busy and needed breaks).  They told me yesterday that most of the companies they are hired by have said none in the near future so both have taken up p-time jobs.  Don't believe the story!

They just can't resist the seductive lure of Thai Immigration's glamorous, cutting edge biometrics.

Went to Pattaya beach and did all the malls for the first time on my return to Thailand after 10 months last week. Saw about 200 people that may have been Chinese all day - none seemed to have bought anything. If they are coming back, they are hiding somewhere and buying nothing any Thai vendor or shop is selling. That said all the farang (if here) seemed to be in bed all day too - though they may have had a better reason.

I was sitting next to a Chinese couple on my flight from Hing Kong to Bangkok, so these numbers must be true.

Problem is they don't spend much when there here.

Great news;  and yes, we had a great month in August.  Made lots of money. ❤️

I don't believe any news coming from and out of China.

I believe very little news coming from Thailand and more importantly news about Chinese coming to Thailand.

If Thailand is banking it's economic growth and survival on China, good luck.

Our guesthouse has had good low season business in the past few years accommodating tour guides for Chinese groups staying at nearby large hotels.

This year that business has been almost non-existent. Let's see if we get any during Golden Week.

Yeah, yeah, Tell Another Tale eh?

I went for a ride along the bypass road and then on to Bang Saray yesterday. Deviated off the route to check out some of the instant-Thai-ancient-culture-just-add-Chinese-tourists places that have popped up out of nowhere. All with Thai and Chinese signs only, no English. There and back I must have seen 300-400 tour buses either waiting for their Chinese customers or en route. Far more buses than a couple of years ago. But I saw no Chinese people out and about, they were only at these "tourist attractions". Check it out for yourselves. Are the zero-baht tours back on again?

PS: The floating market is constantly busy - chokka with buses on Sukhumvit, while 70-80 buses in the car park out back.

PPS: The Chinese-only hotel near my mooban is also constantly busy.

Golden week, isn't that one of the times of year when everybody, and their brother, goes on holiday in China?
