Thai MPs told not to discard garbage in the parliament chamber

Members of parliament have been reminded of the dignity and status of the parliament chamber, and the need to maintain cleanliness, after it was discovered that the chamber was littered with trash, food scraps and food containers following the first day of the marathon debate on the budget bill yesterday.

House Speaker Chuan Leekpai issued the reminder before debate resumed this morning.  He told all MPs that he had received a complaint from the janitors about excessive amounts of garbage littering the chamber.

He said he believed the MPs might not have intended to discard their leftover food, food containers and other trash in the chamber, but might have mistakenly thought of the chamber as a seminar room, where they may be used to such behaviour.

They are treating the chamber the same way the rest of the country is treated. Why change?

  • Dignity and status of the parliament chamber, is he joking? Dignity of that chamber has already been destroyed, by the shenanigans of Prayut and his cronies.

Obviously it's not a sustainable eco chamber! Sounds like it resembles a beach!

Yes, this is what Thais do with leftovers and trash.

It will take a couple of generations before they'll change their behaviour.

The only way it will change is through both education and hitting people hard in the pockets through fines. Singapore used to be a total sh*thole until they started fining people.

It's the way their Mummy's taught them and you can't expect the poor darlings to become real men and do things properly now can you !

When they first started they apparently did more than fine people.

If there is people in the parliament that has been elected to represent the people, that not even understand to take their garbage with them when leaving the chamber. Then you might want to start to examime what in the whole wide world they do understand.

I've been here for a couple of generations and the problem has got worse!

The problem has got worse, but that's because of structural issues not generational issues. I think you would agree that recent generations are more aware of the problem, and more willing and proactive toward a solution than generations past .

Without   generational improvement the problem would had being much much worse IMO.

Pigs at the trough. Should we expect anything different?

One might think that popcorn containers and stray kernels would be the biggest complaint. Wait till they have a decent food fight!

I wonder if trash bins were put inside the parliament rooms would be stolen like the ones on the streets of Bangkok that soon disappear.

I'm going to recommend to my sister-in-law and her husband that they should run for parliament. They are quite good at recycling waste.

This is an instruction more suitable for the children in Nursery School - to have to instruct government officials about such a basic action says much about the mindset of the population.  No wonder the streets, canals, streams, rivers, beaches and oceans are afloat with waste!  LEAD BY EXAMPLE!

In Canada, as an example, In the Chamber, Members may refresh themselves with glasses of water during debate, but the consumption of any other beverage or food is not allowed

Will this include the verbals ??

Yep, just more garbage on top of garbage, just so Thai.

Typical Thai behaviour- just dump you scraps where ever you like.
