Win. 8.1 reverting to Win. 8

My HP Pavilion laptop was Win. 8 when purchased.  When Win. 8.1 became available I upgraded to it, running within Classic Shell.

Thus it has run since, about 7 years.

Today, a Windows update downloaded which took about 2 hours.  Then config. also took several hours with multiple restarts.

When all was done, I was surprised to discover that my Win. 8.1 had been replaced by Win 8.

A window then appeared scolding me for running a now soon to be unsupported OS.  It showed a link to upgrade back to Win 8.1 but when I opened the link, it only wanted to sell me Win 10 Home for $130 and no path to downloading 8.1.

Does anybody here have a clue as to what just happened and what I can do about it?

I remember the 8.1 update was available in the Windows Store and not in the normal Windows update section.

Maybe that helps.

But at some stage you should get used to the idea that you won't be able to use that forever...

Thanks.  Yes, what you say is true.  I've been checking with some techie friends as to whether my laptop is suitable for Win. 10 and the consensus is that Win 10 is my better option.

I just get annoyed at MS's coercive leg breaking to get their vassals to obey.

Strange post.

Windows 8.1 falls under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8, and will reach end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023

If you will move to Windows 10, for Windows 10 Pro

Go to Download Tool now to create the installation media.

Key via eBay.
