Hi! Lost my passport in Chiang Mai because a motorbike I rent got stolen. He didnt have my passport but police gave it to him after 4-5 days fight at the policestation... Anyway, I apply for a new passport at the embassy, but my visa run out during this and I as well lost my returnticket witch was not refundable. So I have to buy a new ticket and I will have 10-15 days overstay depending to what day I can get a ticket home. My question is: since I am unable to leave the country, do I still have to pay the overstay or is there some exeptions?

Regards, Timo, a confused man in Thailand!

To whom did the police give your passport? To the person who stole your motorcycle?

I don’t believe Immigration will make an exception, but you can ask them.

sorry timotei, i won't rent a motorbike for this very reason. foreigners get their rental motorbikes stolen at an abnormally high suspicious rate. and then what? you're asked to pay 30-40k baht to replace it? what a scam. if you get a new passport i hope you're still able to exit without any more problems from this. paying the overstay fine seems trivial to get out of the mess your in.

What country are your from? Most embassies (US and Europe) will grant you a document/letter immediately that entitles you to get back to your home country. Then you can apply for new passport in your home. This happened in Berlin with no problems to get back into US.

Yeah, you don't need a full passport for a one way trip back to your home country. Embassies just give out some document as posted above which you can use at the airport.

Moral of the story ? Don't rent motorbikes and don't carry your passport around. Don't carry your airline ticket either. make sure you scan documents. Make sure you have insurance.

As for your lost ticket, the airline will have a record of your intended flight date and will help almost certainly if contacted before your scheduled departure date, ticket or no ticket.

There are reports of people being detained by immigration having lost their passports and then overstayed, so I would start by making sure you have a police report, then go to your embassy for advice.

So it really wasn't lost in the stolen motorbike, but taken from you to try and assure that you reimburse the rental place for their loss. Anyway, I've heard one too many horror stories about stolen rental motorbikes and because of that bought one right away when I came (but that's not really an option for a normal tourist). I guess the best way, and was suggested by others is to go to your embassy to get the paper that allows you passage back to your home country, then deal with getting a new passport. May have problems coming back to Thailand though, or may receive a letter from your Embassy in the future regarding the whole ditching of your responsiblity of paying for the stolen motorbike. Not sure how that will go... As for airline ticket, have you tried calling the airline? Personally, I only fly ticketless and check in at the counter where they give me the ticket/boarding pass.

Thanks for the answers guys! I didnt apply for the emergency passport because of different reasons. Anyway, I got my new passport from the Swedish embassy today and as for now I am looking for a new ticket. I will go to the Immigration Bureau with my new pass, police report and all other papers I have. Lets c what they say...

This kind of thing is just too sad in Thailand though. Rent a bike stolen... And then the Police co-operate with the guy who rents out the bike and make things more difficult for me and others in my position. Funny, the touristpolice only wanted me to pay cash right there and then. Trying to scare me with things like they can put me in jail if I dont pay and dont have my passport. He wanted 50000 B and has two receipts for a second hand engine and frame for 7500 B. The case is going straight to court because I aint paying no money cash for a stolen bike for a guy that hasnt got any papers, registration or insurance for the bike, and not even for his shop. Someone should just go up there and close him down asap! C & P Service is the shop if someones going to Chiang Mai...

Timo, soon going home, but defenitely coming back soon too... :o
