taichiplanet
interesting tie-in with Phuket and the founders of Penang and Adelaide. Francis Light serving the East India Company spent 10 years based in Thalang (Phuket) from about 1765. He married a local of Portuguese origin, they had a son William who eventually surveyed what became Adelaide. Francis helped thwart a Burmese attack on Phuket and was even nominated for governor which King Rama 2 opposed. He eventually founded Penang. In 1776-77 he even supplied arms to Taksin the Great in the Kingdom of Thonburi. William also had an interesting career (considering he was Eurasian) before Adelaide and served under the Duke of Wellington. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Light https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Light
