November 25, 20196 yr I currently have an International driver’s license that is valid for one year. Today immigration issued me two Residency certificates one of which I intend to use for the motorbike title transfer. I was wondering if there is any advantage of applying for a Thai Drivers license with this extra certificate now?
November 25, 20196 yr The short answer is yes. As far as I know and understand the rule, even with a IDP, you are only allowed to drive or ride here for a maximum of 3 months before you have to get a Thai licence for both. It is two separate licences, as you probably already know, but only one Res cert is requited by the DOT. Edited November 25, 20196 yr by Pilotman

This would be valid/legal for a limited time (only) to drive here. Absolutely: get a Thai DL if you intend to stay on a long term basis. IDP: International Driving Permit Valid for one year: likely a "1949 convention" type (see cover). Others are rejected. Edited November 25, 20196 yr by KhunBENQ
November 25, 20196 yr Author Yes correct it is the 1949 IDP and it does state one year. Was thinking to use IDP this year then next year follow up with a Thai drivers license? Also the Residency permit is only valid apparently for one month so.... still not sure I see the benefits in obtaining a license now. Suggestions thoughts ??

Depends of what your plans for the future are. If you plan to stay in Thailand longer, then you can also get the Thai license now, there is no advantage of waiting. If you won't stay in Thailand longer than a year anyway then nevermind with a Thai license.

So you are here as a tourist/visa exempt? Then sure not try it now. Getting a Thai DL on visa exempt is difficult at least (strictly not possible to the rules).

He mentions that in the OP. I would go ahead and get the Thai DL if only not to waste one of those certificates.
