`Beer Chang' strikes deal with Everton

BANGKOK: -- The makers of Beer Chang have successfully negotiated a sponsorship deal with English Premier League club Everton, the cross-town rivals of Liverpool, whose shirts are currently emblazoned with the logo of major industry competitor Carlsberg.

Thai Beer (1999) sealed the agreement yesterday. The sponsorship deal was reportedly worth around 100 million baht.

Under the agreement, the Beer Chang logo would appear on Everton shirts for three years from August.

Club director Paul Grace said the deal would officially be signed in the next few weeks, after which Wayne Rooney will attend a press conference in Bangkok. The Everton and England striker would be on international duty at Euro 2004 in Portugal until July 4.

Carlsberg may be a major industry competitor within Thailand, but Changs' international sales are a drop in the ocean compared to Carlsbergs'. I can't see how this, makes good business sense as the huge worldwide exposure Chang will receive will mainly be useless as Chang beer is just not widely available outside of Thailand. Not to mention the fact that for Thai marketing purposes Liverpool would be the obvious choice. Unless Chang intend to expand their international operations they are paying worldwide advertising rates just to promote themselves within Thailand.

As whattodo suggests, there must be alternative motivations for this deal.

Anyone know what Thaksins interests in this company actually are?

Chang gives me a headache every time I drink it, In LOS we are limited on the brands of beer we can buy, I do miss Stella and Kronenberg, and I have been told by many freinds that Chang leaves a wicked hangover so I dont know if it will be a complete waste of Thai money as I really cant see it catching on.

India's Tiger Beer is not at all bad, but you only get it in Indian Restauarnts, perhaps it would be wise to sell Chang in Thai ones. (But then customers might not come back) :o

i don t know that it is such a bad idea, thousands of english men come to thailand for holidays every year and are surely exposed to chang.

I dont mind chang though I have gone off it recently because quality control seems to be irrelevant .

thaipauly you could try the ashasi(sic) japanese beer brewed under licience here in thailand, I have been getting a few cans from the bigC when shopping to try it out and so far it has not been too bad.

As I recall, Chang was started as a joint venture with Carlsberg (a Danish brewing company who interestingly used to make "Elephant beer" (maybe they still do) a really strong brew of 11 % w/w) but Carlsberg got out-maneuvred by the Chang boss in the production of Beer Chang.

This may be expat urban legend, but I have heard it enough times to believe it may be true. If so, maybe this is a friendly 'up yours, ex-colonialist country who thought you could make a quick profit from us THAI' from former colleagues.

I'd agree with Stumonster that the lager louts probably miss their Chang when they go back to Blackpool or Birrrrrrrrrrming'm. Chang are probably looking to do a massive marketing campaign to promote themselves in Europe - and it would make sense to advertise on football shirts as most of Europe follows the English football league.

On another note, Carlsberg is arguably high-quality beer. I used to work in a brewery in Sweden which was owned and run by Carlsberg. Everything was closely quality controlled during the whole process, but the local Swedish beers they brewed under license were all but neglected quality-wise.
