Just a thought, but does anybody know what is required to work for ones embassy and what different fields there are to work in?

I should imagine a fair amount of public relations, diplomacy and customer service experience is a must but I don't know any more than that.

I also imagine it to be a very difficult and stressful job so what would be the benefits? If anybody can enlighten me then it would be appreciated.

I would call them but it's Sunday. I've looked on the net about employment but didn't find anything.

Cheers.

For the US, to become a diplomat you must first pass the Foreign Service exam, then go through a barrage of interviews and background checks.

The embassy may offer some temporary, low-level admin-type positions to US nationals applying locally, but I'm not sure about that.

What is required? A vacancy

Only local hires, mainly consular section. No need to go to Nana and soi Cowboy anymore, you'll see loads of bargirls. Prepare to work very hard for a local salary. Your visa status will be a big benefit just like dealing with the Thai governmnet.

As stated before, at least for the US, you need to first pass the the civil service exam which I have heard is no picnic. If you pass, then you are subjected to many background checks to insure you're ok. You would have to apply at the State Department in Washington DC for this. If you do get hired, you do not get to specify where in the world you want to work. They will post you somewhere and it was said that the first assignments are in really undesirable places. The only way to get special consideration for a certain locale is if you have fantastic linguistic skills for the country you are requesting.

Check it out here:

It would be for the British Embassy in Bangkok.

Background checks would not be a problem, I have no criminal record though I have been in debt before. :o

I have loads of experience dealing with people, I'm a good communicator and I speak passable Thai.

Roughly how much is a local salery?

Oh God, not you again...

Now look here Dr. Pong, I know you like picking on me and taking the piss but I said nothing about becoming an actual ambassador - just a job.

It is nothing short of coincidence that I happenned to choose 'Ambassador' as my username, I was going to call myself Stiffy Bunions but I felt that I would not be taken seriously, so I chose Ambassador - the reason being that I am a decent representative of England who doesn't take Thailand for granted.

Mine is a perfectly genuine and valid question, so please don't let's start.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office current vacancies

As you can see they're not exactly screaming out for new job applicants.

I have loads of experience dealing with people, I'm a good communicator and I speak passable Thai.
I have a feeling that you may be a little under qualified. If however I am wrong, and you have an MA in a related field, then when positions do become available they may invite you for an interview. Which will obviously be in London, so make sure you have enough money to cover airfares if you are residing in Thailand. Passable English is more of a requirement than passable Thai.

This would apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office too.

Salary is not based on local wages you are employed by the UK to work in what is technically the UK. Expect to be well compensated for any position within the FCO that requires you to live and work abroad.

Good luck with your application,

IF you intend to persist with the career ambition, I'd do a quick namechange then. Unless you want to piss people off.

If you are really serious, I would try to get an appointment with the embassy's head of personell and discuss the idea with him.

Over the years I had friends of various European countries, who landed jobs in the local consulate or embassy. Usually female for secretarial work.

One thing I wold say for sure, no diplomatic protection, just a local employment.

Your advantage, you do come from the country back home, if you speak and write Thai as well this could be an advantage over the local employees. If you have contacts in Thailand high up, that would benefit the professional diplomats, another advantage.

But whatever happens, I think local employment, no expat-advantages, no home leave, no diplomatic protection.

Good luck!

Roughly how much is a local "salery". Passable Thai and Eng? Learn to read and write Thai and become about 80% fluent. You will liken your chances a hundred fold. Loads of exp. and good comunicator. Would think a good communicator wouldn't be so quick to take a little criticism or joking on chosen name?

If you manage to get a job as an entry clearance officer listening to gentlemen from the U.K. and their new girlfriends all day long, well its actually quite a short working day.

I would suggest that the main qualification is a good sense of humour and the ability to keep a straight face..

Don't know about the UK, but I would suspect at least one or two of the graduates out of SOAS's Thai classes in London, particularly those who have studied other things than the Thai language only, would be prime candidates for local employment at the British Embassy. At least that's the way it works in the Swedish embassy. There are a few people employed locally. They are lucky enough to pay Swedish income tax of approx. 31 % (since they are technically employed in Sweden just as someone mentioned before) on salaries based on local standards (20.000 - 30.000 baht).

They get to meet lots of clueless grumpy old men and equally clueless local girls every day. At least most of the girls have the decency to admit they don't have a clue, whereas most of the grumpy old men act as if they know it all, and the embassy employee is misinformed.

I would imagine Thais working at Immigration have a similar experience.

If this is what you really want to do though, I am sure there's a way, but I would THINK it involves you going back to the UK for some additional studies, at least for a while. To be sent here with a UK salary, benefits and all, you would need a lot more qualifications and some luck I assume, again speaking out of experience of the Swedish situation.

I went to the Embassy today and en-route rang a very nice member of staff who I'd met before who saved me from a que of thrity one and dealt with all my anxiety's and enquiry's promptly in interview room 1.

General admin positions do come up and if I e-mail her to remind her occasionally then I may get lucky - however, the salary isn't great but I'm not in it for the money anyway, I want a job where I can utilise my skills and experience, NOT one where I will be breaking the law and wasting my time with toddlers and doing the same thing that your avarage 'backpacker who doesn't want to go home' does.

Until then I've got my finger in a few pies on the upper shelf of the oven and if I stop biting my nails and worrying too much then things should iron themselves out and I'll soon be living the dream, which is nothing more than having a job I enjoy in a country I love so that then, and only then I will have the security to find myself a woman I love... I'll also be able to get some furniture, safe in the knowledge that I'm not only legit, but I'll be offering something to the community - and I don't just mean offering ciggies to motocycle taxi drivers and wai-ing those who deserve it but rarely get it.

Finally, Dr Pat, yesterday I was reffering to my post a few weeks ago about my unfortunate experience with the Thai Embassy in London. Your responses to my posts were my first experience of your glib put-downs.

Generally I get on very well with my elders, and I'm sure in real life you're not a bad chap so with all due respect, unless it entertains others let's try to get on better. I admit I may have been a little over sensitive but you were a bit of a bully when I first joined and spelling errors aside - I didn't ask for it.

How's that for public relations? :o
