Hero cave-diver felt 'humiliated, dirtied and ashamed' by Elon Musk 'paedo' insult

Vernon Unsworth felt humiliated by Elon Musk's insults

A hero cave-diver has confessed he felt "humiliated, dirtied and ashamed" after being branded a 'paedo' by Elon Musk.

Vernon Unsworth co-ordinated the 2018 Thai cave rescue and helped save 12 schoolboys and their football coach from the Tham Luang cave complex.

Musk sent a mini submarine to Thailand, which Vern labelled a PR stunt, then the billionaire responded by calling him a "pedo guy" on Twitter .

Vernon, whose efforts were rewarded with an MBE, launched legal action to sue the Tesla founder for defamation but the jury found in favour of Musk.

Speaking on today's Good Morning Britain, emotional Vernon said: "He set out to destroy me. Psychologically, I'm a tough guy. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside.

I agree with that. The first comment started the whole mess.

My 8th grade gym teacher could have handled it better...

Coach Carmody would pull the 2 guys into his office, given them each 2 minutes to tell their side, then made them shake hands.

His focus would be on his stopwatch, not the stories.  Exactly 2 minutes...

Would have saved a lot of heartache, a lot of wasted effort, and tons of legal fees.

And out of pocket now that a pipe dreams to win 190 million dollars compensation has evaporated... get over it mate, remember, Stick and Stones...

Both of you were wrong. You felt humiliated, he felt attacked. If you want to go after anyone, go after the lawyers. They seem to have provided bad advice.

A hero cave-diver

I thought earlier topics, here, on TVF revealed that Unsworth was not a cave diver but just somebody giving directions about the mapping of the cave?

How the outpouring of support and sympathy for Unsworth has evaporated, TVF was full of posters urging Unsworth to sue and get a big payday.

Now it seems he should have listened to the wiser ones who told him to back off, sorry but you blew it, a sad ending.

Teflon-Elon got off the hook again.

Like when he declared to take Tesla private at $420 (a code for dope). 20M fine but still calling the shots ????

When he lost the court case, you commented that you and folks around your way have a lot of respect for Unsworth and thought he was a good bloke.

Do you think he is a paedophile? No, you don't.

Do I think he is a paedophile? No, I don't

Do other posters here think he's a paedophile? No, they don't.

Did the jury believe that everybody now thinks that Unsworth is a paedophile? No, they didn't.

He was not defamed.

He set out to humiliate Musk and he lost. Musk didn't set out to destroy Unsworth, Musk set out to defend himself in a court of law and he won.

All the TV / talk shows are not going to change the truth. (Maybe, help Mark Stephens offset some costs though)

The lesson I'll guess to be learned from this is, if you threaten to sue someone, whether a billionaire or your average person, they are maybe going to react as if you ARE going to sue them.

Unsworth first words were it is just a PR stunt this was followed by a tweet branding Unsworth as a ‘pedo guy’ by musk, that is when Unsworth told him where to shove his submarine.

not in this order at all.   and what is this bs about one shoe unsworth coordinating the operation, and he wasn't a diver, and he hadn't personally mapped the entire cave system as claimed.  Yet I do believe that he contributed a lot to the early search and should be thanked for his efforts.

They were terrible comments from Musk and IMO some financial compensation should have been given (maybe a few hundred thousand dollars) but I think Vernon got greedy with the amount asked.

I don't think Musk has come out of this very well though. Now, when I think of Tesla I no longer think of the company with the cool concepts, I think of the company that has the <deleted> owner.

Sure, Musks name calling was out of order. However, the ship has sailed. Vernon just have to pick up the pieces and move on. Not many that wants to hear his complaints anymore. Time to act like a man, and take the losses.

It's far more likely that his American lawyers were the greedy ones and not Unsworth.  Don't forget they would stand to get 40% of any damages awarded.

Why are you bothering with your opinion then?

I enjoy reading both the good and the bad... but not useless posts like yours.

I agree that this Vern guy started the ball rolling and now he is a sore loser... maybe there is some truth to Musk's claims... we will never know

This was also reported in The Daily Mail so I guess his Agent is now hard at work trying to scrape the last dredges from bottom of the cash barrel.

According to the court case he never gave interviews before because they weren't paying enough.

Musk made that pedo comment with ultimate malice. Then he back tracked after being advised by his legal team. He is a coward.

In the US a rich person can buy their way out of nearly any crime with enough money. It is a very corrupt and broken system that favors the rich. You throw millions at a legal team and they can create doubt in the mind of most juries.

Conversely, maybe they can now give away with the purchase of a Tesla a free pedometer:

A juror speaking to the press said that the California jury instructions require 5 points to be met to find for plaintiff's libel claim and the case presented by the plaintiff did not meet them.

Last year I respected you and I was very angry with Musk for what he had written, today I am of the opinion that you are only disappointed for not having received the amount of money you were hoping for, SHAME and stop crying, you are not a pedophile, you know it, should be enough.

Agree , a $ 100,000 and a handshake. That vast amount asked for was on behalf of this pro bono courtcase , The lawyers win and they get 50% , no win they get nothing except publicity , no money for Vern to pay except expenses such as travel. I believe this to be right as I read too many John Grisholm novels.

Piers  Moragn .................pah shame on you, hows that share  dealing stuff you did  years ago going.....

Probably a pervert in some way or another if he kept coming to Thailand, court action for hurty words often ends up going bad, look what happened to Oscar Wilde when he took action against Roseberry for being called a sodomite, he was!
