Thai retailers to stop giving plastic bags from Jan 1

Around 75 brands under the Thai Retailers Association will stop providing plastic bags from January 1 in a bid to reduce the whopping 13.5 billion, or 30 per cent, of plastic bags used in Thailand annually.

 

 

The Department of Pollution Control added that 40 per cent or 18 billion plastic bags come from the fresh market annually, while the rest 30 per cent of 13.5 billion bags come from local grocery stores. In Bangkok alone, each person uses eight plastic bags on average per day, creating around 80 million pieces of plastic waste daily.

 

Thai Retailers Association decided to introduce a campaign titled “Every Day Say No to Plastic Bags”, under which all its 75 members will stop providing such bags through 24,500 distribution channels, hoping to drive the country closer to a plastic waste free society starting next year.

 

The list of 75 participating retailers is as follows:

I am all in favour of getting rid of plastic bags, but I got this a short while ago.

 

Bless the Thais for trying, but they really need to give it some more thought...

I don't agree with this at all, it will not work and there will be a spectacular backtrack within a matter of months.

 

Just watch and see.

Should educate the people and the youngs to make them understand the meaning and the importance of it not by the law forcing not to use it but to reject it by themselves even if it was allowed, to understand life and live consciously this is what the education system should focus on. If the teacher in the school isn’t really aware of this then what to expect from the students.

Yep, the  main problem is  not the bags its  their disposal................. ie  throw it where ever you  want, once again people who are  sensible get penalised for the morons in society. 

Only this  morning I saw the usual "dog  feeder"  remains where the plastic bags still with some rice in  were strewn across the road

8 bags per person per day seems somewhat high unless they are also counting those small bags that the likes of 7-11 like to impose upon everyone.

April 1st moved to January? Number 5 in your list, Makro I have never received once a plastic bag from them, take your goods out in the shopping trolley, you cant bring your own bags in with you, must leave them at security counter.

That will be interesting to see. I doubt it will work. A Thai without plastic bag is like a fish out of water.

We have had no plastic bag days in the supermarkets down our way and some independents don’t give bags down our way - while the idea should be applauded - no alternatives are provided. 
 

People have got to the till with their shopping only to find no bags, no way to carry it home in their bikes - it’s caused no end of confusion with security staff as people push loaded trolleys out of the exits.

 

its also a massive missed opportunity - I bought a few ikea bags from Lazada but no stores have supplies of reusable bags for sale.

I was painting some bits on my car last week and for the life of me I could not find anywhere in my soi that sold newspapers..... I gave up and used some garbage bags instead !!

On the 16. Dec. I was shopping in Plaza, where they had plastic bag free day. I was shocking the staff at the counter, because I had a used plastic bag with me.......!

I will need to buy (plastic) trash bags now which I will use only once instead of re-using the plastic bags from my last shopping trip...

When shopping at Makro, I come home with more plastic waste than any other shop. No carrier bags though!
