BANGKOK(NNT) - The Highways Department has paid compensation for the compulsory purchase of land from villagers in Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi to pave way for the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi motorway, which is expected to open for a trial run in late 2022. The project has compensated those evicted within a month.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob presided over the distribution of compensation payments to villagers of Bang Yai district of Nonthaburi. Motorway No. 81, between Bang Yai and Kanchanaburi, covers 96.41-kilometers. A total of 4,571 villagers have been given compensation for the land appropriated for construction, which is expected to be completed in late 2022 or early 2023.

The Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi motorway is expected to be an important trade route for investment and economic development. It will provide a cargo logistics route connecting to Laem Chabang port, which is part of the Eastern Economic Corridor project, and with Laos and Vietnam in the future. As such, Thailand could become a regional logistics hub.

From what I been told about the purchase of the land that some very rich politicians purchase much of the land from the poor farms a few years back and now sold it to the government to make a very handsome profit.

Surely not.555.

Same day financing finally agreed for the extension to Dawei. Probably.

Or will it be 99% finished when they discover a few bits of essential land have not been purchased yet?

A case for price manipulation might be made.

The budget for land appropriation was originally 5.22 billion baht based on an estimate from 2008-12.

During that time frame:

  • Feasibility Study done (2001)
  • Environmental Impact Assessment done (2003)
  • Survey and Design done (2009)

Then there was the Royal Decree to Surrender Land (2013).

However, Prayut's Cabinet didn't approve the project until April 2015 with a new cost of 5.42 billion baht.

Considering the rates of inflation were largely the greatest during 2008-2012 exceeding approx. 9% compared to 2013-2015 generally below 4% and below 2% from 2015-current, the new budget increase appears excessive by 100 million baht by my estimate. So it appears that some new cost factor has been applied.
