Chuan vows to make parliament an institution dedicated to the people

House Speaker Chuan Leekpai has vowed to make the Thai Parliament an institution recognized by the Thai people and by the international community as the model of an organization which respects the laws and on which the people can rely.

On New Year’s Eve, Mr. Chuan, who is also parliament president, said that, throughout 2019 both the House of Representatives and the Senate had been doing the best they could.

He said he would like all MPs to realize their importance as lawmakers and to work with honour and for the people’s benefit, after the country did not have an elected parliament for five years under junta’s rule, adding that it is not unusual that the present parliament is viewed in a negative light, domestically and externally.

Be a little tough, when you have a PM who stacked the deck with 200 or so of his "closest advisors" and then ran a rigged election to make sure he won. The Thai people recognise it already, for the farce it is.

Ah................but which  people?

Yeh... Nah

Might want to set your goals more int the realms of achievable.

Thai people can surely rely on the fact that the laws respected by the parliament will serve the ultra-rich establishment.

I mean, he really is speaking the truth, just wrapping it in a little bit of redundant semantics, so that your typical Somchai gets a bit confused and goes for another shot of lao khao to grease his mental processes a bit.

The "good" people  AKA  those that "voted" for the incumbent regime

and the Senate

Adding the fully selected (by the unelected P.M.) senate was surely a joke too far. Chuan, who had the amazing Suthep at his side, has never before shown such attention to satire.

Almost wet myself laughing...

Is it 1st April already?!

If you want some credibility Chu Chu, have the watch collector arrested for corruption and perjury! Show some balls!

The ones at the trough, although you needn't have bothered asking as we all knew the answer

At least the people who hold 90% of the nations wealth, after all they are his people and the only ones who matter to him ,sick hypochrit

Good ******* grief

Could this be a New Year's gift? Resignation of the trictator, all those 'former' junta henchmen, the hand picked Election Commission, Constitutional Court, the senators and scrapping this thing they dare call a constitution. Would be a good start. If only....

Or the guy just has a great sense of humour. Those running the show in the last few years are not doing it for the greater good of the general public.  Funny guy.

I will comment here before I even read any more responses. Your selected picture is most appropriate to the hogwash article (emphasis on HOG).

Thank you for posting this pic (worth a thousand words).

Totally amazing that he could make such a statement with a straight face when in realty, he and his band of trough sloppers are as crooked as his yellow tie.

And what is it exactly that they did to the best of their abilities?

No matter, it was the best they could do..., yup.

"House Speaker Chuan Leekpai has vowed to make the Thai Parliament an institution recognized by the Thai people and by the international community as the model of an organization which respects the laws and on which the people can rely."

A new initiative for 2020....quite novel, but I doubt it will be popular.....for example, it would need a quorum for parliament sessions....and that rarely happens

If that's really what you want, send out all the military (which is impossible)!

To make Parliamant an organisation that respects the law they need to remove the law which grants immunity for MPs and senators in the event they are allegedly involved in any criminal activity.

It would also be nice if they were to remove any MPs with a criminal record!

Given are so many that are not elected, that is doubtful.   Get rid of military control and that might happen one day.

The Thai don't have a parliament, they have a Trictator and what is called by some the "Thai Parliament".If Chuan is making this vow now then he is admitting that the current Thai people and the international community don't respect the current laws made by a bunch of law breakers.
