Swedish embassy officials will closely observe the January 15 treason trial of former opposition party leader Kem Sokha, according to an official. Asa Eriksson, a member of the Swedish Parliament, and Jan Axel Nordlander, chairman of Cambodian Initiative, and also former Swedish ambassador to Thailand yesterday visited Sokha at his residence in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kork district.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Muth Chantha, chief of Sokha’s cabinet, said that Ms Eriksson told Sokha that Swedish embassy officials in Phnom Penh will monitor his trial closely. “She [Ms Eriksson] said that the Swedish embassy in Cambodia will monitor a situation during the trial at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court,” Mr Chantha quoted Ms Eriksson as saying in the meeting.

“As we have known that Sweden is the country upholding democracy and human rights,” he said. Mr Chantha said that Sokha will appear at the court on January 15.
