Trump avoids escalating crisis after Iranian missile attacks

He played chicken and lost. A wise man doesn't play games but calculates. Looks like Pence (Iran hawk) will get the full barrel treatment from Trump. If The Don really was a Don rather than an entitled blustering showman he is then it would probably be Jimmy Hoffa time for old Pencey.

Donald Trump turns toward Vice-President Mike Pence – an Iran hawk – after making a statement on the US response to Iranian missile strikes at the White House in Washington.

That's a bit out there.

They listened to Iranian news, nobody else reported any casualties. This was just a little temper tantrum to satisfy the Jihadis.

Iran also claimed to have sent a second volley of missiles, which we know is not true.

Lots of theories spoken as facts... You sound like you certainly hope Iran wins. The quicker the better with the election coming up. Let's watch the world opinion on Iran change as suspicions are becoming stronger about that plane being shot down. Refusing to hand over the black box isn't a sexy optic.

Since the U.S. is oil independant and doesn't need Mid East oil, who is going to assure the rest of the world gets the oil they need if and when the U.S. leaves the Middle East? Because as soon as the U.S. leaves Iraq, it is a sure bet that Iran will take over and control the Iraqi oil. They will then be in a position to upset the Saudi oil production. Those dependant on Mid East oil will have to pay the price that Iran dictates from then on.

It's a sure bet? Really? How is Iran going to do that. Invade Iraq? It's got enough problems there already. But let's say you're correct? It's gotten a lot more likely that Iraq will order the US to leave given that Trump had assassinated not only Soleimani but a high-ranking military member of the Iraqi government as well.

Well, you are entitled to your opinions and conclusions. It holds nothing in the scheme of things. I would like to think that if they pay up for the things built with us dollars when we leave, everybody wins.

But you keep up the resistance Bristol.

Nice try. Trump threatened not to leave Iraq unless the US got paid. So now the US is potentially an occupying power. Good way to rile up the Iraqis and add to the danger to troops stationed there.

And how exactly does Iraq win by paying for that infrastructure? Will the limit on its credit cards be upped?

Iran doesn't need to invade Iraq. Iraq is pretty much a satellite country for Iran now.

So, if that's the case, why aren't they doing it already? Such nonsense.

Such nonsense? What planet are you living on? Why is that Qassem Soleimani could come and go at Baghdad airport so freely? Why was he with a high ranking Iraqi official when he was taken out?

If and when the US leaves Iraq there will be a civil war that will last years.

Nothing like an internet forum for some mindless speculation. Trump has always ignored Pence whilst being watchful of his quiet  ambition. Pence and Pompeo were apparently egging the Don on for decisive action and offing the Salami so he is probably none too happy at having to front the humble pie press conference when his own inner instinct for survival might have been to stay his hand.  Be good to see the inside dope when the leaks start coming through on this one. Anyway it's all Obama's fault , everything all the time is it not ?
