If one could be bothered (which I can't) you could no doubt go through Trump's previous bluster and his supporters here to see what 'gates of hell will be released' rhetoric they were punting in the last few days. Two takeaways on this Trump’s foreign policy blunder. 
- Trump is all talk and showmanship but when shove comes to push, he don’t have the courage to pull the trigger. All the big talk about striking 52 selected targets if Iran attack any US personnel or assets and receiving immediate action hard and fast is all bluster and no bite. Ditto North Korea and China trade war. 

- Iran is playing US like a fiddle. They intentional avoided targeting the troops and avoiding fatalities and watching for Trump’s reaction. Now that they saw the muted response, the next attack or attacks will be much more menacing. Trump will find another excuse not to strike back and off course put the blame on Obama.

US can easily annulate Iran in a conventional war and put the world into a tailspin for years. For the sake of humanity, I don’t want to see that happen. 
 

However what I am implying is that Trump has extremely poor thought and decision making process and this is due to his oversized ego and narcissistic personality or some say disorder. He was offered a menu of action to take against Iran but chose the extreme which shocked his aides. He really has no thoughts of an overall strategy and most importantly the consequences. He just bulldozed his thinking through and his close aides don’t have the fortitude to cross him. He didn’t consult the Pentagon nor Congress for an evaluation. He chose the path now he have to bear the responsibility of its consequences by himself. Looks like he chickened up. He will not commit to a war or escalation and will take the easier path of sanctions.

Anyone with a few brain cells can see what happened here, USA took out a major terrorist....The DON threatened them that if any american dies they will retaliate hard....IRAN fires missiles hitting a few empty buildings and injuring/killing no one...Iran looks like they retaliated to their people while in reality they did absolutely no damage...America does not need to retaliate as IRAN knows it's place now....All in all the best outcome possible really. 

Don really is the best negotiater and strategist...Obama would have refused to kill soleimani and probably just given iran a few more billion dollars to be good.....

Making stuff up isn't really going to provide any intellectual headway. 

 

You have zero idea what options were presented or available. Or who in the defense dept was putting the options on the table.

Apart from some of the terminology I can agree with your first paragraph. Unfortunately I think there will be new US sanctions announced soon, which will not do any good at all.

Since the U.S. is oil independant and doesn't need Mid East oil, who is going to assure the rest of the world gets the oil they need if and when the U.S. leaves the Middle East? Because as soon as the U.S. leaves Iraq, it is a sure bet that Iran will take over and control the Iraqi oil. They will then be in a position to upset the Saudi oil production. Those dependant on Mid East oil will have to pay the price that Iran dictates from then on.

Given that Trump threatened to keep American troops in Iraq until the Iraqis paid for the infrastructure that the USA had built,  it's clear that Trump is utterly clueless.

Well, you are entitled to your opinions and conclusions. It holds nothing in the scheme of things. I would like to think that if they pay up for the things built with us dollars when we leave, everybody wins.

It's a sure bet? Really? How is Iran going to do that. Invade Iraq? It's got enough problems there already. But let's say you're correct? It's gotten a lot more likely that Iraq will order the US to leave given that Trump had assassinated not only Soleimani but a high-ranking military member of the Iraqi government as well.

Nice try. Trump threatened not to leave Iraq unless the US got paid. So now the US is potentially an occupying power. Good way to rile up the Iraqis and add to the danger to troops stationed there.

And how exactly does Iraq win by paying for that infrastructure? Will the limit on its credit cards be upped?

Iran doesn't need to invade Iraq. Iraq is pretty much a satellite country for Iran now.

If and when the US leaves Iraq there will be a civil war that will last years.

Nothing like an internet forum for some mindless speculation. Trump has always ignored Pence whilst being watchful of his quiet  ambition.
